DD had her bottom braces put on Tuesday (9/20) and is still very uncomfortable. She was pretty swollen Tuesday and Wednesday, it did go down some yesterday but it still hurts to eat solids. She is eating soft foods (after spending Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday "eating" liquids) and even that is tough for her. She also started running a temp Tuesday night and it finally came down last night. I am wondering if she had a bug on top of this. She does have an orthodontist appt today to check things out. Has any else or their child experienced anything like this? She has missed school (she does electives on alternate days) and I have to bring a doctor's note in to excuse her.

My daughter just got braces this spring. (top only for now) She was in a lot of pain, too, but I don't remember a fever. I'm glad your dd has a recheck today. I'd be more concerned about the fever with it since the pain is to be expected. :(

I had braces when I was 21, my boys had braces at the ages of 8 and 15. Braces do not cause fevers, I think your child has a cold or something.

As far as the soreness, no pain, no gain!

Thanks, ladies! The orthodontist said it was just taking time for her to adjust to having the bottoms on. He said to continue swishing with saltwater and to do ice packs. She still isn't feeling 100% but is better. She was up and about more today.

I agree with this. Keep encouraging her to eat the more solid foods, even if she's uncomfortable. The soreness will ease up quicker if she can go ahead and work through the pain (kind of like getting up and moving after surgery). IMO anyway. :) It's been a while since I've had braces, but it seems like I remember the pain lasting a lot longer if I babied it than if I just toughed it out.
