Sheila and Tina can! (She and TinaTx) That's all the info. I know about Calvert---that they can help you!
I have only used a couple of supplemental programs from Calvert. I have a friend that used Calvert and she said the teacher manuals are very good. However, a drawback to Calvert is that it is secular. If you are wanting to teach your child from the viewpoint of a christian worldview you will have to supplement and work around the secular texts. Here is a link to a review of Calvert. You can see by looking on the Calvert website that the curriculum packages are expensive. http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/Homeschool_Reviews/reviews.php?rid=273 Here is a link to the Calvert website. http://www.calvertschool.org/engine/content.do?BT_CODE=CES1512
There is another curriculum supplier you may want to take a look at. Their packages come with teacher's manuals and it is biblically based. Sonlight Curriculum http://www.sonlight.com/articles.html
Melinda, What are you specifically looking for? Calvert is good solid, put together, call support available. It has really solid language arts and I think it is a GREAT program to learn how to do your own thing from. I still use their math because it is colorful and teaches in a real nice format to get the kids thinking. On their website you can download an example lesson plan and photo's that show everything you get. What do you want to know specifically from us?
Sorry I was out of town! I need a curriculum to keep us on track I may not use the whole thing or go by what they set forth but its there I live in NY and there rules and regs are hellish as much as I would love to build my own NY tends to frown upon that there for going with a set curriculum would be or best choice But personally I am confused something awful on what to get ARGGG My daughter is going in K if that makes a difference! I would also like something that maybe could be used for each child so it cuts down on costs
Have you discussed with any other New Yorkers what they do? I've learned that lots of times the regs are nothing more than hot air, designed to convince you that you cannot possibly give your children what THEY can, lol! (And no, I DON'T mean that we can just ignore them, but they make them appear more difficult than the reality.)
If you really want to put together your own but...are just afraid of "the man" then find something CHEAP and go with that. That way you have money to build with the things you really want to be using. Be sure K is even required in your state. Most states don't require the child be in school until age 6. Have you explored My Father's World? I love Calvert don't get me wrong I'd just hate to see you chunk out the money when you really want to do your own thing.
Are you wanting sacred or secular, or does it matter? Christian Liberty Academy has a good curriculum and is cheaper than many others. That's what I used my first year of homeschool 9 years ago. You can pick and choose from what they offer, or you can get the "boxed set" that has all they need, and the teacher guides, etc. It may be worth looking into. I'm finding all my other catalogs but that one, but you can Google it, it'll come up. It seems like it's clp (Christian Liberty Press) something. Sorry I can't find or remember the address..........but I still think it's worth a look!
Regarding Christian Liberty Press - Here's a link with an overview of them and some other publishers by Cathy Duffy. http://cathyduffyreviews.com/major-publishers.htm Here is a link to Christian Liberty Press www.christianlibertypress.com I don't think you are going to find a better priced curriculum package than Christian Liberty Press. Also, they have a good reputation for using educationally sound materials. You would be better able to supplement a subject with something else using CLP because it is cheap to begin with, than say, Calvert, that you would have to pay hundreds of dollars more for to begin with.
Sherry, Thanks for that site---it's helpful reading about the different publishers and curriculums available!
My daughter is going in K if that makes a difference! I would also like something that maybe could be used for each child so it cuts down on costs
Melinda, What are the ages of your other children ? Will you be homeschooling more than one this school year ? Are you wanting to combine more than one child on some of the subjects ?
Thank you for the link I am checking it out now I would really like to piece my own together she is all over the map with abilities and i feel it would be better for us both then a box curriculum
....And it usually is cheaper that way, Melinda. If you find some guidelines of what NY expects K'ers to know, then you can probably find sstuff you need on-line for just the cost of printing it out. Plus you can get things at bookstores, Staples, Walmart, those types of places that you could use if needed....
Melinda, What are the ages of your other children ? Will you be homeschooling more than one this school year ? Are you wanting to combine more than one child on some of the subjects ?
My daughter is Almost 5 and my son is 2 I won't be home schooling more then one this year but to at least but the materials away so i am not purchasing over and over again
I printed out the course of study from world book is that pretty much universal We are a family on a budget to a point and spending 600 bucks on a curriculum seems like a waste but don't want to tick of NY either
CLP is WAY cheaper than that! But you have lots of options available! I wish you could find someone from NY to talk with!
So do I we have a one group but u have to be a registered home school not me until next year I joined a group on yahoo for NY we will see what happens
