Rehearsals for The Nutcracker Ballet Production usually begin here late Aug.-early September and DD dances around 8 hours a week in preparation for it. This doesn't include her usual 12 hours of ballet per week. There are also 10 performances in December. Last year I put it under electives and just combined it with ballet on the transcript as ballet/performance- 1 credit. I was wondering if somehow we could add something, (a paper perhaps), for a Fine Arts credit. It's only one ballet so I know its focus is pretty narrow, but so much work goes into it that it seems a pity to lump it in with ballet classes again. I would really appreciate any ideas you may have.
Do you also count this for PE? Plenty of hours for a credit in PE. I'm thinking that the theater experience, practice, and time put into all that should be enough for a fine art credit. I wouldn't require a paper.
I would count regular ballet class as PE, and all the work for the Nutcracker as a fine/performance art credit. If you want to include a paper, I would think maybe a synopsis of the Nutcracker story, maybe a little history of it included. How it came to be, that sort of thing.
I agree with Lindina. For a point of reference, when I was in college we were eligible to add each production as a 2 credit class. It took about the same amount of rehearsal time as what you've described, but we only had 4 performances. I think 1 Fine Arts credit is more than fair.
Thank you all for your ideas, For the last two years we've listed ballet classes as P.E. but Texas only counts up to 2 credits, so I suppose we'll place the other two years under extra curricular. However, as far as the Nutcracker performance (at least one year) I'm going to look at counting it as a Fine Arts/performance- .5 credit.
