Does anyone do a timeline with their kids for history? I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate one with our History. We are starting with Ancient Egypt
Hey!! that's what we are starting with.. We are using www.simplycharlottemason.com next year and they recommend doing a book of centuries. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but you can go to that website and it will show you how to do it.. Angela
Well.. we haven't done one.. but my plans for one is to run a roll of paper down the wall in my hallway. We will use index cards glued on where they need to go. I'm not sure we are doing history this year.. my main plans is to study the states in depth, but next year we will be doing a review of US history before we move on to world history in 7th grade, and we will be doing our timeline for sure then.
How about this? Get some medium or large sized index cards and have your kids cut and paste or draw the event in history. Then have them write the date at the top of the card. Take a hole punch and punch two holes at the top corners. String together with yarn. Start off with major events then have them add events as you continue. It will also be able to be stored nicely and you can save the cards and possibly incorporate them in to other timelines like world timelines and Continental timelines etc. That's just my idea. Good Luck
Go to: http://donnayoung.org/history/timeline-cw.htm It will give you one way to do it. (This is not THE way, or even the way my family does it, but it's good!)
Veritas Press had a huge timeline for ancient Egypt. It was honestly too big for us as it would have wrapped around the walls of our whole classroom [and I was using space for things other than just history LOL]. Their site is veritaspress.com. You'll find their Egyptian history stuff under 2nd grade.
I personally love eye witness books and when I do a history project (even when i was in school) I always used these books. They have wonderful pictures and usally have a timeline in them. We are planning on using these books for our history lessons. Plus I have a really nice World History book from glencoe mcgraw-hill that is written by national geographic that I'm also using. I love time lines it can fit in writing/reading/math/organizing skills/art into one project. GL
Check out Homeschool in the Woods with this link. They have Timeline figures with history through the ages. We did timelines on the walls and also used the History Through the Ages (HTTA) Record of Time book you see with the HTTA stuff. It's a beautiful book, and one they can use for years, and keep forever! http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/ There is also www.timelinesetc.com We used their timeline figures, because we found them before the HTTA ones. They're very good as well! I'd make copies of the figures, then each child would have one for their timeline book, and we'd have one to put up on our wall timeline. We had the absolutly BEST time! We loved the ancient studies, because we compared stories from the Bible with things from the world, and were able to see, on our timelines, how things compared, and how certain things coincided and connected that we never knew before! We put Bible stuff on top of the timeline, and world stuff below the timeline. Okay, I'll try to find pics of the timelines.... Well, I found our Modern History Timeline. We used figures from Story of the World 4 (Modern) Activity Book. This is on a short wall, about 4 or 5 feet long is all, so it didn't take up all that much space. I got the bright green paper and cut it into widths of 1 inch, then staples the strips on the wall.....
Homeschool in the Woods has great timelines. They are actually the ones who provide the timeline figures for Sonlight
But it's not all THAT big, especially compared to some wall timelines that you buy! It's only about 4 feet long!
