Hey! I've not been on in a long time here, but I'd like to ask does anyone have a reliable yet cheap long distance plan?

If you have a high speed internet connection, I suggest Magic Jack. You can get it as a 'second line'. Basically, it is a phone jack that plugs in to a USB port on your computer and uses your internet connection. It is $29.95 a year for unlimited local and long distance. some people use it as their only home phone line, but you'd have to change your phone number to switch completely. Other people I know just use it for their long distance calls.

I have one as a business line from when I was selling Pampered Chef. That way I always knew if a call coming in was personal or business and could answer business calls only when I was in "working hours."

You also get all the usual bells and wistles (voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, etc). But again, if you're just using it for long distance, you don't have to leave it plugged in all the time.

I hope I explained it coherently. They are doing a 30 day free trial right now. You can learn more here.

We recently turned our home phones off and switched to strictly cells, which come with unlimited long distance. It's saved us a little :)

We have unlimited long distance through AT&T. We have a bundle package, but I think it's about $30 a month (u-verse digital phone service). We intended to go cells-only, but when we began comparing prices, we come out better this way. We have a pretty small cell package, and it's not unlimited anything (except mobile to mobile in network).

I've been looking at MagicJack as well. For sure, it's worth the money to buy a year's worth of service. I'd be nervous about buying more than that - even though they urge you to purchase 5 years' worth of service. I once used SunRocket, and the quality of their service was really good, but they went bust. They used the same business model as MagicJack is following now - unlimited nationwide calling for an annual fee. Basically, they hoped to win millions of customers and then sell the company, but they couldn't find a buyer before they ran out of cash. When that happens, you lose service right away.

But for $40 for the first year, that's a risk worth taking.

I know some folks who have gotten magicjack and say the service is not so great but they may be improving it as time goes on. We have our phone tied into a bundle with our cable and internet. We get unlimitted long distance and the total price for the phone is around $40.

We have unlimited phone through Comcast for $30 a month. It is tied in with our internet and cable though. We were strictly cell phone users with no home phone for the last 7 years and that was all free long distance.

Maybe it depends on where you live? IDK. I had it for over a year and it worked fine for me.

I wish I could get unlimited anything on my home phone for $40! Just basic service (no add ons at all) costs us $32!

For most calls, I use Skype. If the other person uses Skype, it's free. Otherwise, I probably spend about $20 a year calling family overseas.

We have sprint cell service so we can get their long distance for $16 a month unlimited. I'ld love to drop our land line but we are so rural that our service is spotty.
