I think next time someone tells me about how my kids need socialization and that they're going to be socially backward without it, I'm going to whip out this little gem: http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-lakew...assmates-with-bb-gun-20110509,0,7122332.story
Those stories are so sad. Even the ones where no one is hurt, it is hard to even fathom what is going on with the child to make them want to hurt people.
"People! Get a grip! It's only a BB gun. Six kids were shot, and all of them are home having dinner and watching TV tonite. I doubt that any of them will miss school tomorrow, and it's likely they won't even have a welt to show off to their classmates. This spring and summer, 9.3 million people will be stung by bees, wasps, and ants. All of these bites are more painfull than being shot with a BB gun. Who should be arrested for this? The bee keeper? This is making a mountain out of a mole hill. This is creating news of nothing. I'm embarrassed for the news service." That was written in the comment area of the article. Really? No....Really? Is this person taking CRAZY PILLS?! Oh, I'm glad kids getting shot with BB Guns isn't a big deal. You know, DH has a BB Gun that looks amazingly like a Glock, and has shot through a huge thick phone book, and grazed someone's cheek. I must have been dreaming when I saw that b/c BB guns don't hurt people!! omg...omg...
I thought the exact same thing, Meg! It needed to be taken seriously, and I'm glad the school did. HOWEVER, my dss shot his cousin with a BB Gun when he was about 12 or 13. TWICE!!! (He said he didn't realize it hurt, and thought his cousin was only teasing when he yelled .)
And what happens when someone gets hit in the eye with a BB gun? My cousin had to have surgery when she was shot in the belly w/one. The bb almost penetrated her bowel.
"You'll shoot your eye out." Sorry.. couldn't help it. The problem is that there is a really good chance that kid thought like the commenter quoted above. There is a likelihood that he honestly thought he couldn't hurt anyone. After all, it's "only a BB gun."
I think it very likely. When my son was in middle school, air soft groups were pretty common. All of the boys wore goggles but DS hit one of the boys and it left a 3/4" gash on the boy's chin. DS was shocked at the damage and refused to play anymore unless they all had complete face mask.
I don't know why the kid took it to school - surely he knew the consequences of even having a 'weapon' of any kind....
