Back in July, I took dd14 to a chiropractor for some on-going back pain. Upon making the appointment and on the first visit, I was told that insurance would pay 100%. My insurance manual says 100% is covered. During the second week of visits, I was told that only 70% would be covered, but rather than making me pay the entire difference, I could just pay a $10 co-pay on top of what the insurance covered. There have been several instances where I have gotten insurance statements with a balance for things that were supposed to be covered. So, I paid the $10 per visit--$90 in all. Today, I got our insurance statement. 100% was covered. Should I ask for my money back? I won't be using him again.

    Yes.

I'd start from the angle of "there must have been a miscommunication." If they don't refund your money, switch to "you will send me a refund." From there, escalate to "I'll be reporting you to your professional ethics board." Then report them. I would also notify your insurance provider; they should be made aware.

Honestly, I hope it was just miscommunication. He gets fantastic reviews, which is why i choose him.

Absolutely call. Just mention that you received your statement and see that the entire amount was covered. You would like a refund on the amount you paid. I had something similar with a chiropractor (can't remember exactly what happened), but they called me once they received payment from insurance and told me they were sending me a refund. It is your money, you have nothing to lose by calling especially if you do not plan on using them again anyway.

Possibly there were varying understandings within the office about how your insurance pays for Chiro.

I would bring it to their attention and if they do not offer to refund then a red flag would definitely go up.

Oh, absolutely I'd bring it up! Hopefully it was just a misunderstanding, but regardless, they don't need to be paid twice!

I would start by calling your insurance company to see if the provider has agreed to accept a certain price. It could be he is intentionally getting you to pay the "extra" he feels he is due because he didn't like the negotiated price with the insurance company.

We make our co-payment at the doctor's office and if he charges more than the insurance company will pay he will accept what they do pay as payment in full. I think the extra you are paying is odd and I would ask about it.

DH called today. He said he would check into it and call us back by the beginning of next week. He did ask how we would want the refund.

Tell him small unmarked bills and see what he says! Glad they are checking into this for you. Hope they figure it out and refund your money.
