How did you choose your kids' names?
I chose Kevin, because most of the cute boys were named that in school. I wanted Kevin to be popular with the girls. I forget why I chose Matthew for his middle name. It sounds good when he's in trouble! Kevin Matthew!!!

I chose Jeannie because my husband fought me over my first choice- Lucy! I also gave up on Lily, and the other name I liked-Donnna. I forget how I came to choose Marie for her middle name... maybe because it sounds good when SHE'S in big trouble!!
    " JeanneMarie.....!!!!!" LOLOL!!!!

I hesitate to post names on a public forum, but I'll share how we came to agree on the kids' names.

With ds, hubby was really, really, REALLY into martial arts. I, however, was not :p . I wanted natural names, like Lake or Timber. Hubby, however, comes from a long line of ordinarily named people....John, William, Bob, etc. So, I finally agreed on a name of a martial artist's son...but, of course the middle name is John.

By the time we had dd, we both wanted a Biblical name and I read through the Concordance about a million times finding just the right name...I wanted a good character and the name's Hebrew meaning had to fit as well. Dd has my middle name (against my will but it 's tradition in dh's family).

I had decided on Rachael long before she was conceived. When Carl and I were engaged, we would talk about "Rachael", and it drove my DSSs crazy, trying to figure out who this Rachael was, LOL! Elizabeth, her middle name, is my maternal grandma's middle name. Her full name means "Beloved Little Lamb". Faythe Nicole means "Victorious through Faith". I wanted Abigail ("Father's Joy"), but Carl put his foot down. He would NOT have his daughter named after "Dear Abby"!!! So, being a good teacher and knowing how to deal with unrully children  , I gave him a choice of Faythe Nicole or Joy Nicole, and he picked Faythe. The weird spelling comes from a former student (who was thrilled when her physical therapist told her I spelled my baby's name the same as her!) Phillip I wanted to name Caleb, but again DH refused (his family comes from West Virginia, and he felt it was too hick-ish, my apologies to any Calebs out there!). I also like Micah, but my oldest DSS is Michael, and that wouldn't be good. I considered Aaron Christopher, but that was the name we had picked for the baby I miscarried, so we decided it needed to be laid to rest with him. It took a bit of discussion to come up with Phillip Daniel. And his name is Phillip, NOT Phil!!! My MIL and some of Carl's family would refere to him as Phil, and it drove me CRAZY!!!

Christian - because I was young, was going to give him up for adoption and wanted him to be raised by a christian family. (Christianity has a whole new meaning to me now though)

Andrew - because we liked the name

Noah - because I had a thing for Noah's Ark (his bedroom was decorated with Noah's Ark everything...border, bedding, toys, musical mobile, diaper bag, you name it...

My daughter's name I over heard a mother yelling for her daughter in a grocery store and it just stuck with me: Annalise. I went home and called my husband and he fell in love with it, too. We went to a restaurant that night (one where you color on the paper tablecloths) and took crayons and wrote, and re-wrote, and re-wrote.....until we decided on how we wanted to spell it. (I tore off a piece of the tablecloth to put in her babybook to see how nutty her parents were!). My middle name is Ann, so I fell like she has a little piece of me.

My son's name we could never agree on. My husband is a "Jr" and he didn't want to do that another soul, so naming after him was a no-no! We made a list and finally decided that we both liked Jacob. We were having dinner with his sister one night and told her that we were pretty sure we finally liked Jacob. Unfortunately, her baby was due before ours and she named her boy Jacob--imagine how livid I was!! We went home and fumed for awhile and opened the baby book to the "J" section and I randomly looked through the page and said, "......uh, how about....Jason?" Amazingly, we both liked it right from the start, and never disagreed.

The middle names for both our kids were chosen practically. My mother had given us some advice: When choosing your child's name, go to the back door and scream it 10 times......just as you will have to do later to get them to come in for dinner. You'll know immediately if it works together or if it's too much of a mouthful! We ended up with Annalise Dianne and Jason Matthew.

OKMom, I know just how you feel!!! I said that we decided on Rachael Elizabeth way before I was even pregnant. Well, we went to my uncle's place for a family reunion. And I mentioned to my uncle that wanted Rachael Elizabeth. Soon after, his daughter became pregnant. She picked out Rachael for a girl, but hadn't settled on a middle name. So my uncle told her that "Rachael Elizabeth is nice, and Elizabeth is my mom's middle name!" My cousin liked it. (Now, understand my cousin had NO IDEA of my thoughts, but her dad sure did!!! And when he told Mom the girl's name they had decided on, mom told him that was my pick. He said, "You mean she really meant it?") I was SO upset with my uncle!!! Her baby was due a month before mine, and I was praying so hard for her to have a boy...his name is Jacob, which was one of my considerations for a boy, too! Then i wanted Abigail for Faythe, but DH refused it. Guess what my cousin named her second child...ABIGAIL!!!

Sounds I'm in good company.....why do people do that?

My sister-in-law also also used my wedding color ideas. I had a long engagement because I was finishing college, and she was going to be my maid of honor (so she knew all my plans). She met a guy, got engaged AND married within 3 months and used all my ideas for dresses, flowers, decorations,....everything. She said, "I know you were going to do this, but it just sounded so nice and that was the only thing that came to mind when I was trying to put mine together." AAARRRRGGGHHH!!

Needless to say, her taking our baby name was the last straw. I don't share too much information with her, now. She'll have to come up with the rest on her own.

Avery Noelle....DH liked the name Avery and I liked it also. I had taught only one Avery and thought it was a beautiful name. Noelle was picked by me. I just have a tendency to like N names and she was due close to Christmas.

Preston Mckay....Preston's name was picked completely by me. I wanted a name that was not so common like John or Mike since our last name is very common. So, I picked both names from a baby book. Preston means "priest like or of the priesthood" and Mckay is an old surname I think.

While trying to remember that immitation is the greatest complement........

My mom and her sister where pregnant at the same time with my mom being due shortly before her sister. My mom miscarried half-way though her pregnancy and her sister ended up naming her son the name that my mom and dad picked out. When I found that out it made ME angry, and I wasn't even born yet when it happened! That might possibly be the lowest thing I have ever, ever heard!

Vicki Diane was named after my sister. My sister was 3 years older than me. She only lived nine hours when she was born. I always said when I was young I would name my daughter after my sister and I did.

    names

    I love this post:
My kids all have 6 letters in their first names and middle names all start with G.
Ansley Gabrielle: I picked Ansley and at first husband didn't like it. I just talked about different names a while and then went back to it. After hearing loads of other ones he said yes that is it. Gabrielle he picked out.
Sawyer and Isaiah are twins. I didn't want Larry and Harry. Who I know anyway.
Sawyer was named while driving by the Peace Center so know I always wonder if there was a sign or something that made me think of that name. His middle is Garrett; I just loved that name.
Isaiah is from the movie losing Isaiah about a black baby who is with a family and the mom comes back for him. I just loved the name and it is Biblical too. Grayson is a name I loved and Scott had an old man friend who was named Mr. Gray so we told him we named Isaiah after him too. Not the whole truth but a little of the truth. He loved it anyway. He was a poor and lonely old man who needed any cheering he could get. He lived in a little shack type house below us several years ago at our other house.
If I had another I would do 6 letters and G's. LOL

Well my oldest first name is after her daddy because it took me 13 years alot of test and surgery and meds. to get pg with her. So, I wanted a special name and her middle name is after a uncle of hers who promise to give her a pair shoe every year until she is 18 if we named the middle name after him. We did and he only bought one pair of shoe for her. LOL He is in heaven now but it's a big joke in the family but still cute.
My young one is first name her daddy found and loved it. Her middle name is after my sister who was only 16 months younger then me. She passed away at the age of 14 in a swimming pool. We remember her too.

Kris, my dad's name is Jack; I was named after him. My little brother was born in 1961, during the Kennedy "Camelot" years. Mom got flowers at the hospital, from "Jack and Jackie". All the nurses were wide-eyed....."Do you know THE KENNEDYS????" LOL!

Love this topic!! Dh and I are playing the name game currently - with five months to go until baby!!! I love hearing all your thoughts and reasons behind your names. I also love all the name ideas!!!
Half my children I did not name - either adopted or step children. I can answer for three of them.

Alexander - who we call Alex was a name I had always liked. His middle name is Galen, after my father.
Noelle - who we call Elle was a name we had picked out for Alex if he had been a girl due to his Christmas time due date. Even though she was born in July we still liked the name. Her middle name is after my mother in law, Rae. Who is named after her father Raymond.
Megan - is a name I liked and her middle name, Rose is after my mom.

Our next baby I would like to have a family name as the middle name again, but dh and I cant agree on a first name. We are not finding out the sex of the baby so we need to come up with a boy and girl name.

We were going to name our son Daniel Michael but dh's aunt cried her eyes out on me. Apparenty they had a baby born and he died shortly after birth (20 years ago) and she begged us not to use the name...so we didn't. :( So... we named our son Zachary Tyler. I picked it mostly I guess. If he would have been a girl dh wanted to name him Rebeka Lynn.

Our daughter is named Sydney Skylar. DH named her. I did not really have a say! He came home a month or two before we were even preggo and said if we have a girl this is her name. So, thats her name! If she would have been a boy she would have been Maxwell Michael.

If I ever have another girl her name will be Ryleigh Lynn. If there was another boy we would name him Maxwell James I do believe. DH does not want anymore kids...so we will see!!

alexander jase: my dh has a unisex name (jory) and is always being called ma'am on the phone. So I picked a name that was definitly a boys name. Jase is a name my husband heard somewhere, he has two brothers jason and jake, we thought jase was a good combination of the two
annabel jorlie: annabel was my grandmothers name. jorlie is after her dad, jory lee
louisa jaynen: I didn't want anything that was cute and matching for my twins, especially if they were identical (which they are) so I didn't want anything that sounded remotely like annie. We picked louisa because it was sort of old fashioned like annabel. Jaynen, well that was my own creation. My other two had a unique middle name, so she needed one too. So I made one for her.

This is old, but I found it interesting.

My husband's initials are TJU, as are his fathers, so my husband really wanted to stick with the initials, we we decided on Tanner James (all three have James as their middle name) very early on. It was the only T name that we both liked.

If we would have had a girl we would have named her Mackenzie Marilyn (Marilyn was my grandmothers name).
