Rachael has to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" this year. I think I want to read that one with her. And then, of course, she and I will watch the movie! Oh, Carl and I read "The Scarlett Pimpernell"! That was fun! And my WONDERFUL husband got me the DVD for our anniversary!!! The movie is actually a combination of two books.

To kill a Mockingbird is a good one, especially as a way to show racism, as it is not overt in the story since it is told from a perspective of an astute 9 yr old. We are reading that with my 13 yr old next year.

Another really good one for a 13yo girl is Christie by Catherine Marshall. I read it in 6th grade, and LOVED it!

Is that the one the TV show is based on?

Yes, but the book is excellent. I didn't particularly care for the TV show. It's like the Little House series. Characters and setting was the same, but that was about it.
