I've been dabbling with coconut oil and water recently after reading so much about the health benefits. Only thing is, its rather expensive, around 7.99 for a small jar. I just wanted to share that I found an awesome deal at Costco! Its a big tub of pure extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil for $19.99!!! 78 fl oz. or 2.3 liters! Brand name is Nutiva. We are eating pancakes right now made with coconut oil instead of butter in the batter...yum!
Do you always use coconut oil in place of Crisco? I kind of assume it lends a sweet taste....if not all the time, what dishes do you use it for?
I just starting experimenting with it, and so far I have made pancakes and brownies with it, and cooked with it for a few days. The pancakes and brownies were delicious and no one except me noticed any difference in flavor, but then again, my 3 little boys and hubby aren't exactly connoisseurs It does lend sort of a sweetish coconut-ish flavor, but it works nicely for desserts and for vegetables as well, in my opinion. According to the many websites I looked at, many people also use it as a crisco substitute, since it is pretty much the same consistency at room temp...think around 70 though...at our record highs here my jar is completely liquid. People have used it in pie crusts in place of Crisco or butter and are happy with it. I cant vouch for that, but based on what I've seen so far, I think it would definitely work. I also plan to add it into smoothies, oatmeal, and anything else I can sneak it into. Some people just take a tablespoon or two daily, but I'm not planning that. Yet. It is definitely a great hair product as well.
Wow. I didn't realize it had so many uses. Just curious....what was the record high in Colorado for yesterday? Here in OK i've heard we had the highest temp on the planet yesterday.
I dont know the exact temp, but we've had 100s here for a stretch, and then now we're in the 90's almost without a break. We usually dont have such hot weather continuously. Coupled with two mild winters, and not enough spring storms, and that's a sure recipe for disaster, as, unfortunately, many people here have found out. We've had terrible wildfires and lost a lot of forest area and homes. We're praying for a wet, snowy winter this year. There was a report yesterday that OK has melting lamps because of the heat, which I found a far stretch, but then later in the article it said it might have been caused by a dumpster fire nearby...talk about sensationalism! Sloan, yes, I massage it into my scalp, and into my hair, from roots to ends, and wash it out after a few hours. Sometimes I sleep with it, as I've heard that its more beneficial the longer it stays...in that case, I just tie a plastic bag over my head at night.. Kind of like a hot oil mask. I do add other oils as well to the mix (Olive, castor, Amla), and heat them all up but coconut oil is the main contender. A lot of Indian people apply it to their hair AFTER they wash it, since supposedly it permeates wet hair better, but I couldn't walk around with oily hair and smelling like coconut oil. It is a great conditioner, since it's one of the few oils that actually gets absorbed into the hair shaft.
A couple hours after I posted that I realized what a doof I sounded like b/c I had not remembered the wildfires ravaging CO. Similar fires are spreading now in OK like you mentioned. There's been talk that some are possibly arson. SO very sad. Hope CO is recovering....I know it did tons of damage. And yes, those lamps were melted by a trash dumpster fire. That was in Stillwater. Went to college there a couple of years before being invited to leave for not going to class. My in-laws live there now and i'm there quite a bit. Surely that started as a joke.....I hope.
You're not a doof for not remembering, TeamJebus The big bad one in Colorado Springs is over with, thank God. I think they were saying that might have been arson too. This summer has been particularly hot pretty much all over... Let's pray that this winter brings the moisture we all need!
