Any particular tips? Hubby has really high blood pressure and we want to try to lower it naturally without him needing meds for it and lowering sodium is one of the ways to help. Any great recipes or websites with recipes/tips on cooking lower sodium? I'm not a huge salt person anyway but I'm not at all aware of how much sodium is in the meals I make.
Iwould stay away from anything canned or overly processed like boxed meals. Those are CRAZY with sodium. Cook as fresh as possible! We buy lots of frozen veggies nd fruits. It may look more expensive than canned, but really, you are getting so much more with frozen rather than canned. If you make soups I would get low sodium broths, or make your own broth! Experiment with herbs! There are so many other ways to flavor dishes other than salt. I would buy some dried bottled herbs, and see which one you fancy! Since I'm losing weight I don't put excess salt on my food anymore (even though I really love it). My go-to seasoning is "italian seasoning" nd "oregano". Love them! Sorry I don't have any recipes or sites!
I've got a friend that sent me an e-mail with an awesome extensive list of low sodium things (packaged even)... I sent her a message with a request for the list again. but you can eat tootsie rolls!
I think the big thing is getting away from soup bases, sauces and sauce mixes - cook more with herbs. Season chicken with Rosemary and Thyme. My Dad needs a super low sodium diet too. We were raised on everything home cooked, not even packet mixes. I have an awesome recipe for home-made spaghetti sauce. It's hard these to find home cooking recipes that don't also use pre-prepared foods in the recipe.
Bwahahaha! Real food from scratch is your best bet. (my hubby has high BP, cholesterol, triglycerides, type 1 diabetes, etc...) We've slowly been changing what we eat to get healthier. My best advice is baby steps and cut out the big ones first. Cream soups are a biggie for us, it's something we've cut back on but I do still use so we're going to be trying a homemade mix soon http://pinterest.com/search/?q=homemade cream soup mix Also, check out http://www.fooducate.com/ very cool, not only does it grade the food and tell you what to worry about it in, it give you healthier alternatives to it! It's awesome.
