Ok I am the opposite of everyone else. I learned math by counting on my fingers and I still do it. I find it embarrassing when I am out somewhere and I need to count on my fingers when a math issue comes up. For this reason I make my DS do his math mentally. I don’t want him counting on his fingers when he’s my age. Old habbits are hard to break. When he first came out of PS he was counting on his fingers, however before he went in at Kindergarten he could do it mentally . He was to be an engineer now among his many career choices. He will need to be able to quickly do mental math. My cousin just lost a job opportunity paying $65,000 a year because of a timed math test. She knew the answers but she spent most of her time counting on her fingers as a result, her time was slow. We have done math drills everyday for the last year. Worked like a charm. Sorry, I just have a personal issue with this.

I was never taught how to count by points until I was married and had 3 kids. Then it was my brother who showed me. My ds seems to be doing much MUCH better today with his speed and everything else in math.

I tell you, the family closet was a lifesaver, wish I would have implemented that when my 2nd dd was born. Better late than never though right
