I think I've mentioned on this forum that my DD17 struggles with Algebra 1. She is taking the charter school's on site math class 2 days a week and she ABSOLUTELY HAS TO PASS THIS to graduate in May. We were really sweating her 1 semester grade-it was Do or Die. If she failed, then she would not grad in May. Well, she passed with a C! I know its not very good, but if you look at where she'd been at the beginning of the year, its amazing. Her first chapter test she scored 26%. On the semester final, she scored 71%. So great improvement! Now all we have to do is pass this semester, and she is home free! <<stressful>>
Yeah, I don't mean it like that. I realize now how that sounded. It is awesome and she worked really hard. The best thing about it is that she proved to herself that she could do it. It's still a struggle but its not impossible.
Good for her! That's wonderful! My best girlfriend in high school had massive trouble passing Algebra. She tried three times and it just didn't click for her. Was an absolute trauma getting her to pass it to graduate. Some people are simply not wired for math....I wish the schools would understand that kids are more hurt than helped by the No Child Crusade. Here's the funny part....my best friend is a bank manager now! Seriously. She supervises a staff of 10, writes loans, and keeps flawless accounts. She reports that there is very little algebra in her job, and lots and lots of people skills. She makes a very good living at her job.
Yes, I totally agree with your comment. I struggled with math in high school and after graduation, I ended up in banking, as well. Adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing-give me the basics!
