I'm in the process of doing some redecorating in our home and I would like some input about an upcoming purchase. First, let me give you an idea of what I already have in my living room. I have a cherry armoire entertainment center, two end tables that are espresso (almost cherry), and my wall decor is black & white photos with black & white or black & silver frames. I also have a brown leather bench/coffee table. I would like to purchase a leather sofa & love seat but would like to know if I should look @ black or brown or does it really matter since they will be two of the largest pieces in the room?

Advice from anyone with a better decor sense would be greatly appreciated.

With the cherry armoire, could you possibly even go with a deep red couch? and what is your wall color?

What is your wall & trim color? Is this room open to any other room such as kitchen? If it is the color of cabinets, counter tops, etc. would come into play. Also what do you have on your floor? I don't want to seem to nosy but the more details you give the easier it is to understand your color palet.

Just my two cents but don't go black. I have a black leather couch, love seat and chair and I hate them. I just said to dh last night that i wish they were brown.

I love the idea of a deep red or brown.

all of our wood furniture are chery colored, we have a lether footstool/storage bin
and we just bought a couch, loveseet and recliner that are brown lether "look"...... its really a microfiber fabric. ......It looks as good as it can in a small room. But we really don't have any kind of decoration theme. (I wish we did). It sounds like your room would look great,

Thanks, guys! Looks like I did leave out a few important elements. The floor is a genuine hardwood that is a cherry color and I will be repainting soon and it will be a taupe. This room opens into the dining room which is now a red color but I plan to also do some repainting in there and keep the red below the chair rail and the same taupe as the living room above the chair rail.

Brooke, I actually found a nice looking red sofa & love seat on Craig's list that I considered (I haven't actually been there to look at it yet), however, it's not leather and since we have two four-legged babies (mini dachshund & mini yorkie), the leather is really what we'd like to go with since it will be easier to maintain in the event of any accidents.

One other thing I need to add is that I also have a fireplace that is red brick.

Well sinc eyou already have a lot of red going on I wouldn't get a red couch. I would get a leather one in a shade of brown and then ad accent pillows with reds in them. That way the red isn't too much but just enough.

Can you post some pictures of your room? That might help.

I agree with Tiffany you have enough red going on. I would go a brown with maybe some red pillows.

I agree that there is already a lot of red going on. If you already have brown leather on a bench, it would be nice to match that leather in your other furniture. I think black leather would be a nice contrast with your color pallet, especially with the silver, white and black accents in your room.

May I ask why you dislike the black vs. the brown?

Thanks, everyone, for the input! Y'all are the bestest!

You definitely need a splash of color in there. I agree with the others on adding the red accents! I think brown- it is classy without being harsh like black.

To me the black is too harsh. It is too "single guy" looking for my taste. Even with throw pillows it is still just so .......... black. I think brown looks much more sophisticated. Not that I am very sophisticted ;) but it just looks more pulled together. That is just my opinion though and honestly I do love my chair. For some reason I love my black leather overstuffed chair but hate the couch and love seat. When we finally do get new furniture some day I will keep that chair.

I too think that the brown would look the best. Brown compliments red. Now black, I too have black leather and have had it for about 8 years or more and I think that it can look just fine and classy if done right. But in your case your color palet is set up more for brown furniture. Just my two cents. :)

Hey Monkey Mama...I need a black leather couch and loveseat...
    hee hee.
I have a brown leather couch and while I love the leather yea! It is a bit to comfy and casual and this room seems to be wandering a bit more toward the modern look.
So I think that "single guy" sofa might be just what I need. Trade ya.
    ha ha
well, maybe really. WHERE in Texas...

Oh my gosh I would totally trade you! lol! :D I am totally serious! I want a comfy casual brown leather couch! I don't want modern and that is what mine feels like to me. And your couch would fit in so nicely with the decor when I move. We are going to go with a "country" and "western" type of feel. Okay so I now north of Houston and will be moving in a few months to between Houston and Austin. Let's trade!
