Do you belong to a homeschool group in real life?

What kind? Co-op classes? Play group? Parents meeting? Field trip group? Something else?

I belong to a local homeschool support group. With that group there are lots of different options to do. We offer a Friday co-op, field trips, Mom's get togethers, end of year testing, prayer group, and other special events. We partcipate in the Friday co-op. I try to go to the Mom's get togethers. We have done some of the field trips but it depends on where they are and the ages they are directed to.

How often do you meet with these groups?

Friday co-op meets for 10 weeks in the fall and then 10 weeks in the spring. We are there all day (since I am part of the board) which is from 9-2:30. Our Mom's get togethers are usually evey other month during the school year. This year we went on trips to plays and to one of the local museums for their gingerbread house display.

Are you in the city or out in the boonies or somewhere in between?

We live in the suburbs. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the Church where co-op is and most of the events. The Mom's meetings are usually at someone's house or a central location so the distance varies.

As soon as I started considering homeschooling, I contacted a friend who homeschools. She told me about a group in my small city and I got on their email list. We've already gone on a field trip with them. They have a geography club that meets twice a month, picks a country and then asks each child to bring something related to that country (game, food, map, report) if they want. They also have a history group of families using a certain popular history curriculum, but I chose to use a different history study. Other than that I think it's mostly field trips. There are other groups in my area, but they are further away ( maybe a half hour drive each way). One is a more formal Christian group that has weekly classes, formal dances and even a graduation ceremony. Another gets together for fun stuff like "Nerf Wars" and laser tag.

I am part of one but it's really hard to be part of the ongoing activites. The house the military housing gave us is a hour away from the main base. Were we live is so quiet that it's perfect for childless or for the 5 and under crowd. Everythingis at main base or the housing 20 minutes away from it. As of now it's mostly on our own but I am trying to connect with the group but it's difficult. There are no other groups since we are living in Japan and homeschooling is pretty much non existant here. The group had a co-op last year and every other week meeted up for bowling. Now there are monthly gatherings to the pool. There were a few field trips a month ago but we just moved here and really couldn't attended like I wanted to. Now most families have traveled back to their home counties for the summer. I lookforward to the fall and when the 'school year' starts up to see how it goes. Oh it has board memebers but there are no monthly meetings.

What kind? Co-op classes? Play group? Parents meeting? Field trip group? Something else? I've got a few yahoo groups I keep up with for announcements, etc. They occasionally have field trips, and they have a weekly park day. My biggest involvement is with a group for moms who have kids aged 0-5. It's a group dedicated to playdates, preschool-aged field trips, classes, parent informationals, and just plain support/friendship. It'll be starting up some co-ops soon. (It's a fairly new group.) *I* will be starting a spin-off of the group (with the blessing of the original member) for a group of 5-10 year olds for exactly the same purpose, because all of us have grown fond of each other and want to remain in the group. Our kids are starting to age out (the older ones), but we still have a 0-5 group need for our younger kids. The groups will inter-twine. I'll be starting that group in the Fall. Still getting the bugs worked out and brainstorming with another member.

How often do you meet with these groups? Whenever something is scheduled on the group calendar. There are 3 of us who have access to the calendar, but anyone can make suggestions to us. We do more in the fall and spring than in summer or around holidays (obviously).

Are you in the city or out in the boonies or somewhere in between? I'm in a suburb of a major city. One of those places where all the cities seem to run together.
