DS came back from his dad's with a little rash on his back. Since Sunday it got worse and today when he got up it was from head to toe. We went to the ER since the dr couldn't get us in until next week. They said it was either poison oak or ivy. He says it just itches a little and the doctor said it was due to his medicine he is already on. At least now we know what it is. He seems to be doing okay. Anyone know how long it takes to clear it up. I hope the other kids don't get it.
Oh man I feel sorry for him. I am highly allergice to poison ivy. I contacted it just after Thanksgiving and it was from my wrists to my shoulders on both arms. They both swelled up to about 3 times there normal size and my elbows were full of fluid. Nothing helped until I got a shot in the rear at the clinic and applied a topical perscription cream. The shot began to work right away and with the help of the cream it cleared up in about 1 1/2 weeks. However I had it for almost a full month. Before the shot I tried everything under the sun to relieve the itch and I had to stay dopped up on Benedryl to even be able to tolerate it at all. I wanted to die. Next time I get it I have to immediately go to the ER. Dh says I should just wear a hazmat suit.
Or if you have any Touch-Me-Not growing (aka Jewel Weed), break open the stem and put that on it. It dries it up REALLY fast! http://www.bing.com/images/search?q...sis-Spotted-Touch-me-Not-Jewelweed-flower.jpg
I could bathe in calamine and it wouldn't do a thing. If you have a mild case then yes calamine will sooth the itch well enough to deal with it until it is gone. If you have a severe case like I did the only thing that will work is the shot.
I don't know. I think there's something in the Jewel Weed that neutralizes whatever it is in Poison Ivy that we react to. So I'm not sure it would work on other stuff. It pretty much dries it up. Now, if you were to get it in your blood, like if you had a cut or something to where it was spreading all over your body, you'd probably need a shot for that.
I am one of those people who can get poison ivy from looking at the words written on paper. I hope I don't get it from reading this thread! I am highly allergic to it and have suffered from it many times. Mine will not go away without shots. Once I get the shot I am usually better in a week. Mine always itches terribly.
