I am trying to find some very last minute Earth day projects for my K-5 and K-3 kids! I had planned to plant a small veggie garden with them on Wed, but our entire backyard was ruined in a windstorm last monday. we are still waiting on insurance so we have not been able to clean up yet, so the garden idea is out the window! We are going to plant a new tree in our front yard on Wed, but I was looking for some more projects! Any ideas are greatly appreciated! thanks guys!!!
We plant a garden but not for Earth Day, I dotn like to celebrate the earth, but I do plan to go to the park near us they have free stuff for kids to learn about and do and bring home on that day. So thats as close as we come to celebrating it. ds and dd get to do things with theguy whojuggles for them toO! They learned to juggle last year, and ds got to be in theproduction as the assistant! So its a big deal tous to go to it at least.
Oops forgot my ideas! Go plant a terarium to study how things grow. Go for a hike and focus on what the trail is like, look for animal tracks etc and look up the animals in your area to see what ones are what? Study the Bible Genesis Chapter 1. Take it a step further by doing a short lap book of each area that was created, or study the topography of the earth and do a lap book of that. Study what topography is! A lot of people today have no clue!
We did this one 2 years ago ( we just printed the pages we wanted): http://www.abcteach.com/directory/think_green_teach_green/earth_day/ We did this one last year!! http://www.epa.gov/Region5/publications/happy/happy.pdf Also we are planting strawberries in pots this year. That might work for you since you can't do a full on garden right now. You could also go around your neighborhood and pick up trash or clean up a park near you with some other families. Also you can watch some earth type movies: Planet Earth series An Inconvenient Truth Flay Away Home The Day Agter tomorrow Free Willy March of the Penguins Fern Gully Wall-E
thanks CrystalCA thanks! I love the strawberry pot idea! i am headed to homedepot to get the strawberries!!! I think we are going to start some veggie seeds in a seed tray and then once our yard gets fixed we will move them to the garden spot! I love the Al Gore movie, but it will be over my kids heads! I am going to pick up March of the Pengiuns! I totally understand the 1st post, but personally I have no problem participating in Earth Day, and I do believe in celebrating the Earth. I do not think that goes against any Christian values, atleast not the values our family holds! we have one earth and we are destroying it, I hope my kids learn to cherish the one earth we have, and to protect it for future generations! We use the resuable grocery bags in our family, but I saw a website that asked kids to decorated paper bags and pass them out at a grocery store on Earth day. I think this is a great idea, we have a Publix right behind our house! I am going to ask the kids what they think about this idea as well! keep the ideas coming guys! and thanks for everyones opinions! Different opinions are what makes this world so interesting!
if you have an apartment you can plant many things in a planter! We had tomatoes and pepers, strawberries and onions, and something else forget what it was, but all at our aparment befor we had a housenow we do squarefoot garden style
oh and the avatar on my name here shows an apple tree my ds 17 planted as a seed in a pot in the back yard. He got it from one of his apples!
I like the ideas! Thank you both for wonderful ideas! I would have never thought of growing an apple tree for an apple seed! I would just trash the eaten apple! LOL great ideas! I think I am going to let the kids paint the strawberry jar however they would like too as part of the project! amy
thanks chica! I found some on this page to print for my little kids class tonight Since its this week I got the Superhero one! IT has good pointers about the things kids can do to help like recycling, reducing trash etc
Someone mentioned doing a lapbook. Someone has made an Earth Day mini-lapbook and posted the printables online. If you're interested, go to the HS Launch site and search for "earth day" to get the link for it and a couple of other items. I'll be glad when I can post links.
