I am looking for some simple sewing patterns/projects for my little ones.

The 5 and 8 year old are wanting to learn to sew. They can use my machine, but they love to give it gas. <--too much.

I would love to find some online for them to do with their hands.

    Thanks for all your help.

They can make pillows out of felt. In Sunday School, my kids cut out hearts and sewed them together with large needles and yarn. They were stuffed, and the kids were told that they were to remind us to keep a "soft heart", unlike Saul. Faythe came home and made one for Daddy! She also made a felt bookbag. She decorated it with a felt butterfly she cut out and sewed on. Again, using yarn to sew it together, and embroidery floss for the butterfly.

If you want to use the machine, aprons are very easy to make, or pot-holders. They could start now on the pot-holders and give them away as Christmas presents to Grandmas.

My dd 9 would like to learn to sew, too. She just a week or 2 ago took an old shirt and made a pair of pants and a shirt for her Build-A-Bear. She did a really good job...she came out of her room and showed me and I had to do a double take!

I am also going to have her make some decorative pillows for her bed. She has been begging me to paint her walls in her room bright pink, lime green, purple and blue! So, I said instead of that she could make the pillows and use all those colors.

I agree with Jackie, felt is a great why to start. You could make cute little purses or bags. Cut out a square or some shape with four sides. Sew 3 sides shut with yarn. Sew on a yarn or felt handle. My son has also sewn wash cloths together and made pillows. One of his bright ideas. He thought his bunny needed a pillow. It didn't use it for long. LOL
If they put their little minds to it I bet they could make a lot of little cute things with felt and yarn and then you could move on to something else. You could do a search on line and maybe come up with some good ideas. Good Luck and have fun.

My dd-9 has been interested in sewing also. Her first project was a quilt kit from Joanne's. It was on sale and on sale again, and grandma couldn't resist! So she helped her make it, though dd did the sewing, and it turned out really cute! She gave the blanket away to a little girl whose family we are really close with. They moved to Maryland, and came back for a visit. When they were here dd gave the little girl (age 2 1.2) the quilt (it's fuzzy soft material), and the little girl just loved it! So that was a neat thing to do with it, although I kind of wanted to keep her first project. But that's okay. We have a neighbor across the street who's kids are married now. She has been teaching sewing off and on to my dd, starting last year. I am so grateful to her. She won't let me pay her because she says she really enjoys the time, how could she charge for that? I feel blessed to live right across the street from her!

Anyway, try to catch the big sales and get them little kits maybe to begin with. Then they can graduate to doing their own cutting ... Just an idea...

We had a gal on here a while back whose daughter was making a quilt for missions. She wanted each square to be from a different state, so Rachael made her an Ohio Star out of Scarlet and Grey (OSU Buckeye colors) from Ohio.

JoAnn's has some really good classes for kids. You might consider checking into them. Rachael also made a sock doll at that age for her aunt's baby shower. It was the hit of the shower! Our library has LOTS of books on sewing crafts for kids...ask the librarian!
