Madison really likes Reading Rainbow and Nova. I also enjoy watching CyberChase with her, its about math and science. We only have local channels so these are on PBS.
Zaboomafoo Jack Hanna Mr Rogers Reading Rainbow We also have another channel, (kind of like a discovery) that has various educational shows: science, history, nature, arts, etc on it. Then we also have another channel that has travel, crafts, etc. We don't have cable.
Oh my where should I start. Preschool age: anything on animal planet Sesame Street Barney (great for manners and morals) Little Einstiens Handy Manny (manners and morals as well) Between the Lions (my favorite!!!) Over preschool age: Cyber Chase Fetch with Ruff Ruffman Animal Planet History Channel TLC (early in the morning there are programs just for school like 4 am our time) A&E (has same type thing as TLC) Some PBS programs Discovery Channel My 8 year old loves Mythbusters-- I love that it teaches him scientific process. I could go on and on and on. Really anything on tv can be educational if you use it in the right context. Even Sponge Bob could be educational.. for example if you use the relationship between Patrick and Sponge Bob and talk about how it is important to treat your friends the right way or if you ask questions like "Do you think that could really happen? What would happen if it did?" In my honest opinion anything that gets the kid's mind working is educational.
I don't know if any of these will be helpful as I'm not in America but Cait (11) loves Mythbusters & Meet the Ancestors .The last is a British Broadcasting production & besides the archaeology did facial reconstructions which my child found absolutely fascinating.
So does mine. He and DH watch it together. Thanks for all of the replies. Keep them coming. I'm setting up my DVR!
Yup, we have loved all of these shows. Anything on Animal Planet or the Discovery Channel pretty much rocks. We recently enjoyed Planet Earth and my DD loves the Growing Up series. We watched Bindi the Jungle Girl last week and enjoyed it as well. My DS likes Modern Marvels as well as a show called Survivorman. There are so many choices, I love it.
All the ones mentioned are great. Also on PBS they have some great documentary tpye stuff that my 10 yr old will watch at night with us. PBS also has great shows on different kings and queens. The last one we watched was on King Henry the 8th and then another one on Mary Queen of Scotts.
dd is huge on animal planet and discovery she also like tutenstein mostly she watches animal planet and discovery. If there is something on ancient history she will watch the History Channel.
Between the Lions Cyberspace Carmen SanDiego (OK, no longer on!) The Magic Schoolbus (again, no longer on!) Liberty's Kids (another one no longer on!) Nellie, Jack Hanna is one of our "home town heros"! He's from the Columbus Zoo, where we use to have our membership. EVERYONE here knows "Jungle Jack"!
Between the Lions Cyberchase Arthur Postcards from Buster Time Warp Trio Magic Schoolbus Mythbusters Dirty Jobs
I found a Magic Schoolbus video at Target the other day! So of course I had to get it. Ds is not too into educational shows...We don't have cable, so he pretty much watches PBS and VeggieTales. He does love Backyardigans, too, and I like them because they have the stereotypical storylines (mystery, western, etc.) and I have to admit, I find the tunes catchy!
I remember when we had animal planet and discovery, those were nice. BUT it is GREAT not having a tv bill!!!
Oh I forgot Modern Marvels.. Garrett loves that one too! He has never seen Survivorman.. but I caught it once.. man I learned alot!
ABall... I was just going to say that Food Network is great educational TV. My 2 dd's LOVVVEEE Unwrapped and The Secret Life of ... They also love Rachel Ray and The Food Network Challenges (me too!). Also , this might be alittle controversial, but we LOVE watching Futureweapons on TLC as a family. Same with the Military channel. We love watching the new guns and tanks but also how Futureweapons are making things to help soliders. Safer landmine removal and safer ( oxymoron) explosives. Also on HGTV channel we love watching and making gifts/crafts from the Creative Juice show. They have the best ideas and its usually using stuff that you have around the house. Zoom on PBS was a great kids show...I'm going to see if they have that on Netflix! Also another older show ( I know they have THIS on Netflix) is Popular Mechanics for Kids. I have bought several of the videos at library sales and on Ebay. We still watch them. We also get the VOOM network ( on DishNetwork) and there are 28 channels in HD and 15 of them are educational! We get a world channel ( featuring movies and news from around the world) , nature ( programs from BBC and other countries , lots of subtitles sometimes), tresure ( which are art gallerys , museums and auctions) ,travel.. ( we have seen some obscure countries and cities) ..too much to list but we watch something new everyday and love it! We watch this show called Elsewhere and it profiles 4 families from 4 different countries and I tell ya I will NEVER complain about my life in America AGAIN!! The struggle of some of these families is heartbreaking but they endure it and are closer as a family because of what they go through. Plus they appreciate everthing ,things we take for granted everyday are blessings to them! It has really opened my dd's eyes to what other people go through just to make it to tomorrow.
We love the discovery channel. . .Myth Busters, Stunt Junkies and Popular Mechanics for kids are all great for teaching the scientific method.
