I have a can of chalkboard paint that I bought a year ago and never used.

I bought a giant chalkboard for the playroom at a thrift store for 50 cents.

The chalkboard is OLD and the chalk doesn't always write well. We're using sidewalk chalk. Is that the problem? does regular chalk write differently on chalk boards?

I think if chalk is chalk, then the board is old and worn too smooth and needs a layer of chalkboard paint, as long as I have it.

So, the question really is, is chalkboard paint's result going to be better than a worn-out chalkboard, or will I basically do a bunch of work and wind up with what I already have? How well does chalkboard paint work?

    Thanks!

When we moved into our house (going on 3 years ago), we painted one wall in each of the kids' rooms in magnetic chalkboard paint. We've had no problems with it. They've used regular chalk & sidewalk chalk on them. We've washed the walls a few times with water & a few drops of dish soap, when they get dirty & too dusty.
I say go for it. You've already fot the paint, so it's not like you have to go spend the money on it. it's worth a shot. Just make sure you apply it right, so that it's completely flat (use on of those rectangle pads, not a brush), or you won't be able to write on it properly.

I say go for it. We were going to paint part of Sophie's room with it and instead decided to go with dry erase paint and magnetic paint. Let us know if it worked or not.

I actually have a can of white board paint right now. We are working on the Sunday School room at church...painted it a bright yellow from the drap color it was when we moved it, removed the nasty carpet and finished the beautiful hard-wood floors. There are two nice-sized blackboards, but they are covered with all kinds of sticky stuff. I am in the process now of removing all the sticky stuff, and then painting over them with whiteboard paint.

I have been using the chalkboard paint since I started doing things at home. It's great for my kids.

Chalkboard paint is great. We've redone some of the chalkboards at church and they do just fine. I've also used flat-black spray paint, in several fine coats, on the back of some leftover pieces of that slick-on-one-side wallboard (what's it called?? melamine??) that's used in bathrooms and tub surrounds. So whiteboard on one side (dry erase surface!) and blackboard (or any other color flat spray paint) on the other side. Works just fine, although you might have to go over it lightly with a fine grit sandpaper before using it the first time. I don't think you have to do that with chalkboard paint.

WE have a gigantic painted spot on our wall that is chalkboard paint. PAINT YOUR CHALKBOARD!! :D

It works great. Use a roller for the most even coverage and smoothest finish. :D
