So how do I know if I should move my son onto book 1 and a half, or book 2? He will be doing the end of the book test this week, then we'll go to Mardel's and pick up the next book. He has come SO FAR since he started in the fall! I am proud of him. He is reading - sounding everything out, but reading - and we really just need to work on building confidence and remembering all the crazy rules!!! aisling
If he does fine on the posttest, I'd move on....if he has trouble in ETC 2, then go get the 1/2 book if needed. Or at least that's what we're doing. My son finished ETC 1 last week and HOP level 1 on Friday. On the ETC post-test he did fine except I did NOT do all the 5 dictation sentences....we haven't worked on that and he was overwhelmed after 2 (although did fine...missed one word I think but we did it VERY SLOWLY).....mostly because he freaked out over writing a whole sentence........guess we need to work on that. I'm sure longer users of ETC will offer us both some good advice. Rhonda C.
I decided to go on to book 2. He did fine on the test, I didn't do all of the sentence dictation with him, just two. The biggest "issue" he has in book one is mixing up b, d, and p's and that isn't going to be solved by keeping him doing the same old stuff. AND I figure he is on lesson 66 in Teach Your Child To Read, which is much more advanced than book 1 & 1.5 of ETC! So. Tommorow, there will be blends. I also told him we're going to start spelling, because I want him to get used to having a list of words each week, I think we'll start next week with just 5-10 words. Thanks for the input!
The half books are really for readers who are struggling. We haven't had to use any of them either. I find that ETC is paced such that extra, extra review isn't necessary. ;-)
