I'm in need of some new reading material for me! :D I love inspirational fiction, romance (but not sleazy), a little bit of a mystery (but not gorry), and some historical fiction. I would even be willing to something new if it came highly recommended! So, who are your favorite authors and why do you like them?

I like Diane Mott Davidson's books. "Cozy" mystery series revolving around Goldy, who is a caterer. Complete with recipes. ;)
Also the ones by Virginia Rich and/or Nancy Pickard. VR was the original author of a series of books involving an elderly widow, and Nancy Pickard took over. Also food related, with recipes.

Some others in the same genre (not necessarily food), but I can't think of any I've read by these yet: Stephanie Meier, Janet Evanovich, Laura Childs, Joanne Fluke. Here's a website that lists tons of authors in this genre!

I want to get back into reading the Left Behind series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. Each of those guys also has more books that aren't in that series.

And I recently started reading Frank Peretti. He's a Christian author, writing Christian fiction. I read "The Visitation" and it was pretty good. A little more gory than I'd have guessed (okay, a lot more), but it was a good story. I'm glad it wasn't a movie, though the cover says it IS a movie. LOL I have a couple more books by him, and if they're all that gory, I probably won't read many more.

And if you haven't read Pilgrim's Progress yet, read that. :) I should join you!

Thanks for some input- I've requested several of them! We are getting ready to go on a beach vacation! I'm dreaming of long days with a book and the beach! Somehow, I don't think it will quite work out that way with two little ones but I can dream! :D

hehehe Well, have fun on your vacation! When are you leaving?

And did you see my other thread, posted before I noticed this one, about the historical fiction book based in ancient Sumeria? Apparently, it is part of a series of 3 or 4 more books, so that's something to look at as well. We're all about ancient history here lately, and book lists are a big part of that.... But I've not actually read many/any of them yet!

We like the Sue Graftons here, too. Dunno if they're too gory or not, but the Perettie was definately moreso than they are.

"Cozy" mysteries are, by definition, not gory. Grafton's series is not cozy, but it doesn't bother me at all. They're intense, suspenseful, but not graphically gory.

I'm told that I'd like Patterson, and have a few of his books that I've yet to read. ;)

    And there's always Grisham.

I think all mysteries are "Cozy" since they are my relaxation! I have a hard time picturing a book as gory, but that's just me...I'm wierd I know that. My neighbor tells me all the time "You are the oddest duck I've ever met"

Wow!! Great minds think alike! So many of the authors already listed are on my love list! I really like Debbie Macomber's books. I don't think I've read one yet that I don't love! She has a Blossom Street series that is really good. These are Chick and not mystery. Joann Mapson does a Bad Girl Creek series that are really good also - same genre. Jennifer Chiaverini does a quilt series. There is a needlepoint type shop mystery that I love but can't remember the author off of the top of my head!

Here is a really good website for mysteries:http://berkleysignetmysteries.com/

You can search by genre and I've found some really good ones that way. I'm running low on reads right now so I will be definitely checking back here! I'm reading Tribute by Nora Roberts right now. Really good story line but the language may be offensive to some. It's not too bad but I had to add that!

Another great mystery series is by Laurien Berenson...her mysteries all revolve around dog shows and her pedigreed standard poodles Faith and Eve!

Oh, if you like James Patterson you so need to go buy or check out a book by Jeffery Deaver! He is awesome! He is the one who wrote the "Bone Collector" and "Kiss the Girls" . I own almost all of his books and just love his writing! He catches you on the first page and keeps you until you read the last word. There is twists and turns all through out his books, I just love them.

I saw Robert Parker and wanted to add that he has a really good series with Sunny Randall as the main character. She is a female PI. Tamar Meyers/Myers (don't remember which) does a Bed and Breakfast with a Mennonite/Amish touch.

The needlework one is by Monica Ferris. Laura Childs does a Tea Shop mystery series set in Charleston, SC. Susan Wittig Albert does does a series centered around herbs - China Bayles is the main character in that.

Man, I could go on forever!

Wow! You guys are awesome! Some of the authors I've read- some I've read them all and others I read a few and then they started to all read the same and I got bored! There were several I haven't read yet so I will be checking them out!

We leave Sept 5 for our trip! My brother and his family is meeting us and we are sharing a house for a week. It should be a lot of fun!

Susan May (or Mae) Warren - romance, clean but doesn't really talk about religion/church that much

Karen Kingsbury - inspirational fiction, I like her stand-alones better than the Baxter family series. Almost all her books make me cry.

    Francine Rivers - awesome!!

Dee Henderson - mystery, really good. Her books suck me in and I don't want to do anything else.

I like Frank Perreti's books. He does sometimes go to places I wouldn't expect a Christian novel to go but it's not extreme to me. I used to read some really not-Christian stuff so my tolerance may be higher than it should. Monster was really cool!

Ted Dekker - I've just started reading his books and I'm still not sure. They're kinda hard for me to get into but once I do I really enjoy them.

I didn't read the replies, but I love historical fiction.. Eugenia Price is one of my favs there.

Right now I am reading the Stephanie Plum series from Janet Evanovich.. kinda smutty, but very funny and a suspense all in one. They don't need to be read in order.

Tamar Myers has 2 series - The Den of Antiquity Series, and the Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery Series. They are both great.

I also love Patricia Sprinkle. She has the Thoroughly Southern Mystery Series, and The family Mystery Series.

Oh, and my absolute all-time favorite author - Liz Curtis Higgs. She has an entire series of historical romances based on the story of Jacob and Leah.

    Hi
My mother loves historical fiction and romance books. She is really into Regency fiction/romance right now. I don't know any of the authors nor titles though.

I tend to read nonfiction books. The book I'm reading right now is, _The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers & Fathers Are Going Broke_ by Elizabeth Warren & Amelia Warren Tyagi.

    Have fun reading!
