There is a park with a creek near our place. It's clean and shallow. We love to go there to splash and look for critters. The kids can spend all day there. We play on the playground equipment to dry off.

It often leads to them wanting to learn more about something at home. It's kind of an "unschooling" style summer outing for us.

We do a lot of nature walks around our house.. we live in the country but its something that could be done in town too. Our nature walks have different themes.. like one day I will have DS talk a notebook and have him find different things in nature that start with each letter of the alphabet. another day we may be looking at different kinds of bark on the trees, or leaves, or count how many animals we see, or have him draw different bugs he's seen. It is one of their favorite things to do.
Also, we go to the library a couple towns over where they have story time on Tuesdays during the summer. that same town has a great downtown area, and the kids like walking through the shops and then of course getting ice cream afterwards :) just some things we do.

We love to go to the National Museum of Play on hot days. We also like to go to the Genesee Country Museum at least one time a summer. They have a farm area, a 19th century village and do special events each weekend. I love the Laura Ingalls Wilder days and the Civil War reenactment they do. We also try to go on at least one cruise on the Erie Canal. Besides those things just getting out and exploring the parks is always fun.
