I am just beside myself with disbelief! My son is a senior in a public high school. Although he has had to learn to compensate for a learning disability, he is very bright, motivated and has done very well. He applied to five colleges and was accepted to all five. Three of them have invited him to apply for their merit scholarships based on his record. (Just when I thought that the applications and essays were behind him, these invitations meant more applications and essays, as well as campus visits, debates and interviews.) Well, so far, he has been awarded a full academic scholarship at one, a full ride at the second and is waiting to hear from the third. I just can't believe it! We are hoping to have similar opportunites for my daughter and have tried to get her into the same program that he has been in. It is a magnet program for academically gifted students which he has been in since 4th grade. Well our school system has undergone massive growth in the past 10 years and we haven't been able to get her in (there is a lottery to get into the school, then testing to get into the program). Our base school doesn't have anything even close, so we decided to homeschool this year. Now I'm really feeling the pressure to provide the best I can for her.
AWESOME!!! Congrats to your son (and his parents!). We started homeschooling because where the Army moved us didn't have the best schools and because my hubby has been in Iraq and Saudi for 3 of the last 4 years....needed some family time... Anyway, if she doesn't get in because of the lottery....she can still get into almost any college. Homeschoolers are recruited these days and receive all sort of scholarships and many come in with several credits from CLEP, community college classes attended as high school students, etc. If she's a candidate for the gifted school, she can still have similar opportunities as a homeschooler. Of course, the magnet program sounds great and I hope that she gets in if that's what is best from your family. Rhonda C.
I know you can do it and maybe even a better job then the school, because you all can move faster and at her pace. Good Luck hope it all works out for you all.
That is awesome!!! Congrats to your son - and your family as well. His college experience should be wonderful without any pressure from student loans and part time jobs (unless he wants one!). He should be very proud of his accomplishments!
Erica, my daughter is 7, so she is almost ten years younger than my son. If there were only a 6 year difference, she would have automatically been enrolled in the school because of the sibling preference. Bummer. This has been our first year of homeschooling and we are both enjoying it tremendously - so far, so good.
And you will! I am also hs'ing a highly gifted daughter - a little older than yours. I've got tons of resources for gifted kids - let me know if you need any ideas. Lisa Rivero's book Creative Homeschooling for Smart Families is a great starting point. Good luck and have fun!
