Does anyone have a recommendation for a financial course for teenagers? A local co-op had a wonderful course many years ago, but they put it together themselves. My children were much too you, but I did the evaluations for some of the students who took the course. They brought in people from all sectors to talk about banking, insurance, budgeting, realty and renting, taxes, etc. I see that Larry Burkett of Crown Ministries has a 10-week course. Dave Ramsey has a high school curriculum, but it's way too expensive. Abeka has a consumer math course, but I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking for. I realize that I could just teach her from our life, but my head is so cluttered that I'd like at least a list of important things to teach her. If I knew she'd be here until she graduates, I'd feel confident that I'd cover everything as we went about life, but I'm only guarenteed this year. Anyway, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't looked at the Dave Ramsey program, but I've heard WONDERFUL reviews from other homeschool families. It may be worth the money. I also trust Larry Burkett as a great source. I've yet to read anything by him that I thought was hokey or unsound (but I'm no financial expert).
SOS has a "consumer math" elective that looks like it might be what you want. It's $85 from AOP, so it's probably around $75 from CBD (but I didn't look). http://www.aophomeschooling.com/product/10soscm/
I've never used it but Math - U - See has a Stewardship program that has a christian worldview, and it covers personal finance and consumer math. the program new will run about 80.00 but you may be able to find parts of it used and save some $$
We bought the Dave Ramsey program last year and it was a wonderful program for my teen. I'm looking to sell it. Let me know if you're interested and i can get it together and get you a price. I would recommend this program to everyone, even the parents. IM me if interested.
We are using a 10 week course from Crown this year. We haven't started it yet so I really can't tell you anything about it. If I would have know Dave Ramsey had one, I would have gone with it.
I found one called Life Prep for Homeschoolers by Barbara Frank. It was only $20 at Amazon. I think it is what I was looking for... I hope. I liked the financial curriculums, but I think this has a bit more than just straight finances. It covers topics for college-bound and career-bound. Topics include buying a car, getting a loan, purchasing car insurance, learning about credit cards, purchasing health insurance, renting an apartment, grocery shopping, paying utilities, buying a home, paying taxes, and keeping a budget as well as applying for college and writing a college entrance essay. I'll let you all know if it is any good. Thanks for ideas!
Our co-op is offering the Dave Ramsey course to our 7-12th graders this school year. It's the first time we've offered an "elective" that will be enough for an actual transcript 1/2 credit. Normally, we offer "extras". Not all of them are taking it (as it requires them to come earlier to co-op than normal). My oldest will be taking it. I'm very excited about it for her. Dave is a hoot! We were able to save a bit of $$ too by ordering the workbooks thru a groupbuy at Home School Buyer's Co-op.
