I have one question. How big is the flat? I was thinking one of the brown envelopes ( like an unfolded sheet of paper size) But the link said a business sized envelope? So is it suppose to be small? Sorry I am trying to figure it out. I am thinking we will make two and then host two as well. I just have to get the details right in my sleep deprived brain. I have one boy and one girl so either would work.
I used the brown envelopes and did Flats that where relatively biggish. (like, cut out from most of a piece of paper)
I was also thinking of "'larger-ish" and a manila 8.5x11" envelope. I looked at some Flat Stanley pictures online, and in some of them Flat Stanley was barely visible because he was so small. But if you get up close enough for Stanley to show in the picture, you miss the background of the pic that shows where Stanley is or what he's doing....
Here's the post I put on our (now horribly outdated) homeschool blog about the first Flat we hosted. http://homeschoolblogger.com/educhronicle/494847/
Thanks for the links. That is more what I was thinking. When will we need to have the flats ready to head out?
Tomorrow is the last day to sign up. I've kind of been rethinking the "free for all" on deciding who we're going to swap with because SO MANY people want to do it. So here's what I'm thinking: I'm going to make a list later of everyone who wants to participate, along with how many Flats they'll send and how many they'll host. I'd like each of you to PM me where you live (not address, just city/province) if it doesn't say in your post heading. Please also include if you have any preference whatsoever on who you send to or host for. I.e. if you think Aggie sounded like the perfect host, please request Aggie. Or if you think my boys would be most interested in where you'd take their Flats, then say so. I'm guessing there won't be a lot of these requests, but you're welcome to make them if you have a preference. Then tomorrow I'll list out who is swapping with whom. I'll take geographic location into account (meaning I won't have a Dallas family send to another Dallas family). I'll honor any gender-based requests, etc. I'm thinking that it's not unreasonable to ask them to be in the mail by Wednesday. What do you think? I'd like to get them to families in time to take advantage of any end-of-the-Summer adventures.
That sounds like a lot of work, Amie! But it sounds like a plan! I want to play, too, but I'm afraid we'll have to wait until on over in the fall, maybe September?, because we're not back in school yet.
We have been swapping our Flat with some cousins, but we would love to participate in another swap! We'll start getting Stanley ready! We go to the zoo or aquarium. We live in BC, so I can try to get some pics at a popular BC attraction too! (Maybe an Olympic venue . . . hmm...)
I've only received PMs from three of you so far. I'd like to have as much done tonight as possible...
Ok, I've heard back from nearly everyone who still needed to give me information. We have one family who is leaving for vacation in two days. Mom would like to know if anyone is able to send out a FLAT asap to the address where they are going to stay? Do any of you have a FLAT ready to get in the mail today or tomorrow? Please Pm me if you do.
Question: Is it better to create a lot of Flat Travelers and send them out all over the place? or to make one or two and send them to several places, with them coming back home between trips?
We sent out two at a time, and it felt like we were waiting forever to get them back. I would recommend making a few (maybe 4?), and sending them out one a week. Then they will come and go in a bit more of a staggered time line. I gave a 2 week suggested return time, but so far everyone has been a bit late. I've only got one back so far, and they went out July 15th. I know one is in the mail on it's way back, and one more is due back early next week, but I'm not hopeful. I expect it will be late too! We have a Japanease student staying with us right now. She has said she will take one home with her, take some pictures and send it back. We are excited about that, so we made a few more flat's.
