Ok-I want to just throw one of these together-rather than buy one... When I taught-we had a good time with puppets and felt boards with the books.... uh-yeah-except....any thoughts on how? Am worried a hot glue gun won't stick to the felt(cuz I've had that trouble before)-I sew so that's not a problem....but I can't just use cardboard and felt if its gonna last....and I'd like it to stand on its own if possible (although I can always lean it against something). Ok I'm pretty creative, but this has me stumped. Maybe its the pregnancy-I can't seem to actually think this go around (cuz it's a girl-she's taking my smarts in a way no boy can...:lol Any thoughts?
Here's a tutorial I found. Not sure if it's what you're looking for? http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-make-a-felt-board/index.html
I saw another one that just used hardboard and colored duct tape on the edges. Wasn't bad looking that way. Or you could sew the felt to wrap around a board... kind of pillow sham style if that makes sense.
One more... this one I like a lot: http://threesneakybugs.wordpress.com/2008/03/23/making-a-felt-board/
I used one of those science project boards that fold in threes, and just wrapped the flannel around it tightly and stapled it. The board worked great and I gave it away to another family when I was finished with it just a few months ago. I used it at least once a week for almost two years.
I bought a white board with just plain, IDK, board on the back. Bought a yard of felt at the fabric store, and glued it on with a liquid glue. It may have just been elmer's. Did you know you can print out onto stiff fabric interfacing? I cut it into 8-12x11 rectangles, printed with the color printer, and cut them out. I didn't do that for all my figures, but it was a nice change and they've held up remarkably well.
You said you wanted the board to be free standing. Not sure I can paint the right picture with words but I will try. Using heavy duty cardboard cut out the following dimensions. Rectangle>>>Top & Bottom measurement: 28 inches.... Side measurement: 6 inches. Now trim off the bottom corners as follows: Measure up side:2 inches.... then from corner in: 5 inches.... Draw a line from the 2 inch mark to the 5 inch mark and cut along this line. Measure 5 inches in along top from corner and fold to match bottom cut. Hot glue to back of board at bottom edge. This should allow board to lean back. Just be carefull not to press to heavily on board, as the cardboard support could bend.
I found this link awhile ago and have been hanging on to it for someday when I make a felt board. I really liked how she did it. http://charmingthebirdsfromthetrees.blogspot.com/2008/08/easy-felt-board.html
THANK YOU!!! You guys are the best!(I was at a loss....) Where did you find the three fold board? I need one for a different project and can't seem to locate one.
I wanna say I've seen them in an office store. like Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, whatever, but I'm not absolutely certain. Ask for "display board", "presentation board", "project board" or "science board" because they're used for any type of presentation, but very often for science fair projects.
I know everyone has put in their input and I haven't read everyone's response, but what about Corkboard? What about putting some felt on cork board and pinning it in the back. It's free standing, and you could put stick pins to hold something else onto the board if needed. If you were done with the felt board, then just unstick the pins and you have a like new cork board to use. Just a suggestion. :/
I buy mine at Joann's because I get a teacher discount, I've also bought them at michaels before with a coupon. Wal-mart sometimes carries them but not always.
I made two, one is in a picture frame for my dd to use whenever. And the other is glued to plywood. I don't have it mounted on the wall so I can use it where ever we want.
