I was checking for a free download of the old Oregon Trail game. I was in total luck. When I got there and downloaded it, I noticed all the other games. They have tons of games, educational, puzzle, sport, etc. Here is the link for the Oregon Trail. Here is the link for the 1st page of the Educational games. If you want any of the others, just click the link across the bottom of the banner. NOTE: When I downloaded the game the first time it didn't go through. I had to go to the second link to download, that time it was no problem. Didn't take but about 5 minutes on dial-up.
OMG! I have wonderful memories of wanting to throw the computer out the lab window because of that game...lol. No really, I think this is one of those things that binds our generation together. Any game that every school in the country with a computer lab thought was worth playing, is probably still worth playing, iykwim.
I love the Underdogs! Browse their whole collection...There are some fantastic games for learning in other categories. A few things worth mentioning...Most of the software at that site is for MS DOS. If you have a computer with Windows 98 or older or even DOS, no problem. Later Windows however might have problems and the games will likely not be playable on XP or Vista. No problem. DOS Box will emulate DOS on any Windows system. Simply download the Windows version from here. You may also have problems with the older games being too fast. They were built for much slower computers. however Mo' Slo will fix that and make the game playable with our much faster processors. DOS Box is free and Mo'Slo Basic is shareware. Finding old DOS games was a hobby of mine a couple of years ago, I even built a Pentium to install DOS.
I've got Xp and it works fine. The kids were up late last night killing everyone in the house. My 6yo made it the longest. For some reason, I kept dying of a stupid snake bite, even when my son was the doctor. I found it cute when my DD picked to be a teacher, everytime. I even told her that the teacher makes less money. She didn't care. She said it was more important. AWE!!!
Oh good! Okay, I should revise and say try it on XP and if it doesn't work, then maybe the things I suggested would help.
XP can pretty much run any dos, or previous version of windows' programs or games. If Xp does not run it or if it will not install correctly it us usually because the program's instalation routine is checking for a certain version of windows and bacasue it was written prior to xp that check fails and the install quits. In these cases, you simple right click on the install, setup, or other .exe file and select properties, and compatibility and select a previous version of windows or dos. there are other parameters you can set on that tab as well.
