I came across this site on a homeschool blog, it's called k-12freehomeschool.org. I've read through the site, and it sounds good. This is our first year to homeschool, and I don't feel as if I've done enough, and I feel as though I spend more time looking through websites finding stuff than I would like to. I, myself, am a tad-bit ADD and staying on track is difficult sometimes. I would like to do an online homeschool, but don't want to shell out the big bucks for 2 kids. So, I guess what I'm asking is, has anyone heard of this or has anyone used this? If you have any input on this, please let me know.

    Thanks so much
    Crystal

I saw this a while back. Sounds good, but their is a catch.

    Quote from site:

Question: How can you folks afford to give away tuition-free (K-12Free) courses?

Answer: In exchange for receiving the services of K-12FreeHomeschool.org you agree to respond to questions, surveys and offers from our corporate sponsors. Examples would include your willingness to comment on the quality and grade-level appropriateness of a given course. Providing your suggestions and/or criticisms of our courses. You agree to consider providing an optional donation to us to help meet our expenseis (donations are optional, NEVER required). All parents and students are automatically enrolled in our K-12Free Club. Club members receive email and/or postal offers about products and services that may be of interest to homeschoolers; you agree to read and sometimes 'grade' these offers and are NEVER required to purchase anything. You agree to consider helping out other homeschooling parents via our Parent/Teacher Message board (participation is requested but NEVER required). Some information that you receive will be about products and/or services that are in development and/or not available to the general public... in these situations you agree not to forward this information to any 3rd party. K-12FreeHomeschool pages display our site corporate sponsorships which allow you to visit their sites and/or considering their offers. You are NEVER required to visit a sponsor' site or purchase anything. These are just some examples and may be modified at any time.

Your responses are very valuable to us and by providing us with the benefits of your opinions. By participating in these activities you help us improve and further develop our offerings. Your participation is your way of contributing instead of contributing with required tuition and it allows us to provide you with these free and/or highly-discounted products and/or services.[top]

Question: Who can enroll in K-12FreeHomeschool.org courses?

Answer: www.K-12FreeHomeschool.org accepts a very limited number of yearly enrollments... usually only about 1700 students. We only serve homeschoolers who meet certain criteria and who also agree to respond to quality surveys and marketing trials. Once initial enrollments are filled all applicants are placed on a waiting list. You will be informed as to your enrollment status shortly after your enrollment form has been completed. Applicants who have remitted payments because they selected options (if any) and who are also placed on 'waiting list' status will be immediately refunded any charges until a space becomes available. As more corporate sponsorships begin then additional enrollments will be accepted on a weekly basis. Here are some of the details which can change without notice. We expect there to be a much higher demand than spaces will allow so please enroll early.

It's a free program because it's funded by the state you live in. It's considered a public school, but you do it at home.

I used K-12 for my oldest daughter when she was in first grade. I NEVER had to fill out a survey or trial ANYTHING.

I am currently in the process of enrolling my youngest daughter for K-12 for kindergarten this year.

    I highly recommend the program.

Some one on this spot said that it was not a good thing to get into they had researched it and advice was given to avoid it.. I don't recall who it was one of the techie type peeps?

Personally speaking-- if it is likethe one that my friend used here it is very controling. I personally am finding through the 13 years of schooling my kids that I enjoy the flex time of home schooling andnot being "controled" by a school system. Now that may be okay for you, me not so much.
My kids have days when they are not as focused and though we still do school I can tell personally if they are going to do a better job on that assignment tomorrow than today... plus feild trips that pop up into a free day at a museum or something of the sort are always jumping into our schedule. If I had to follow someone elses list of days to do what I would not have done so well through the years.
My dd is actually at the point she could graduate this year if she had electives I missed and a PE class lol, so the important stuff is there.
I am not really bragging, just mentioning that you can do it on your own... if you need the help from a k12 program check into it, but check also to see how hard or easy it would be to opt out of it without ramifictions hindering your child's learning and dare I say "self esteme". My friend's son had a hard time staying on task with his taskmasker teacher and ended up feeling ignorant and 'bad'.
    So aproach it with caution.
    Thats my two cents worth.

You are pretty much a "test subject" for a set curriculum. My problem is that if it isn't working for your child - you may be stuck for the year. It's funny because it is so true that each child can be SOOOO different and each one will learn at a different pace.

I think the concept is nice if you are willing to be a tester - however you might not always get the BEST for YOUR child. (Does that make sense? I'm on a bunch of pain meds at the moment and not sure if I'm thinking clearly - LOL)

Homemom.....thank you so much for the info. I was floored when I read that. I knew I could count on the ladies here to help me out. I would've never figured that out. So I guess the old saying is true "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is". Again, thanks to everyone for their advice.

wow, you know what I was actually looking at two of the schools mentioned in this for dd because they had done a good job with my friends grand daughter.. that was like 4 years ago so maybe she actually took over the original or something because the one we looked at was based near us... supposedly. Anyway I didn't get to do it, but that is okay. I will pray for the people involved in all this.
