Yesterday I received a sewing machine via Freecycle but it doesn't have a manual. Does anyone know a trusted site where I can download a free manual? This machine takes cartridges (none included with this one) which is something my old machine didn't have. I know there are quite a few sewers on here so I thought maybe someone could help!

What kind of machine is it and maybe the model number. Someone on here might be able to help. I don't have one that takes cartridges, but I will ask at church.

Thanks Beth! It is a Sears Kenmore Model 158.19140. I have no clue how old it is.

I can't find any free ones, but I see some on ebay for 8.90, free shipping. They say CD so I'm guessing you print them yourself?

Thanks Sommer! I was scared to open things not knowing if they could be trusted. This will get me started. Now if I can just figure out where I put my sewing machine oil when we moved a year ago lol!

Any 3 in 1 oil or wd-40 will work :)

I got an OLD kenmore off of free cycle last year. The lady said "well I can't figure it out, but if you can it's yours!" I took it in desperation. It sewed when I brought it home, BUT it sewed BACKWARDS!!!

I started hunting for information on it, I had the book to it, but it never said anything about it sewing backwards..lol It is a very fancy machine, esp for the age of it! Has all kinds of programable stitches, all digital and what not. Now mind you it's from the 70s or early 80s I forget which now, so it doesn't look like it's magnificent, but it still had all it's different feet.. like 10 of them! even the original case of needles was in it!

I finally found the same machine on ebay, the seller said it was all refinished blah blah blah. Again in desperation I wrote the seller. I told him about the machine I was given, what it was doing and if he had any clue. He was VERY nice (esp since he wasn't getting my money..lol) and gave me step by step instructions on how to open every single bit of the machine and oil some parts that are never ever seen by a normal person..lol. He promised me it would be time consuming and a headache but it was most likely the problem (a part was seized up). I spent a few hours working on my "patient", I figured if nothing else I hadn't paid anything for it and would have to resort to begging on freecycle for a new machine once again if I failed in my attempt to revive the obviously unloved machine.

IT WORKED!!! The thing sews beautiful now, it even does letter embroidery and flowers and leaves and this and that. Now it COULD sew a bit faster, because like in my truck I have a lead foot, but I will take it for what it is, an old sewing machine that was unloved for quite some time and I will love it like it deserves.

This video actually shows mine, maybe they have one for yours :) I'll hunt :)
