Hi my name is Esther. we are in central Tx. my 5 yr old DD starts school next year. I want to HS but I don't I am still trying to work it all out. I just am not sure if I have the patience to HS or would be a good teacher. I am looking into Bob Jones.
Welcome to Homeschool Spot and to homeschooling! I think some ladies in here have used BJU, so I'm sure they'll be by soon to tell you how they liked it.
Welcome! We've been HSing for 14 months now. My youngest is 5 and finishing K. Kindergarten at home is VERY easy to do. He can complete most of the 3 R's in 30 mins or less when he's highly motivated. The other stuff (science, etc) can be thru field trips, little experiments, library books, etc. You don't need a formal curriculum for them. We used Horizons Math K (www.aop.com) which I HIGHLY recommend. He finished his K program a few weeks ago...we took a break from math...and now he's on lesson 6 or so of Horizons 1st grade. He is also using Hooked on Phonics and Explode the Code for reading. HOP wasn't my original choice but it absolutely fits his particular learning style for reading. Explode the Code is a great writing component to HOP (although from bk 2 on, we do the lessons a bit out of order to match up to HOP). For handwriting, we used A Reason for Handwriting K. You can easily do handwriting with free online resources though. He's done science with his sisters (field trips and now we're doing Apologia Zoology 2). For history, we've been on lots of field trips....since we moved near Colonial Williamsburg last year. We participate in a small co-op at church where he's had different short classes (health, cooking, animals, pe, etc). Honestly, give K at home a try especially since you don't feel right about PS. You can always enroll her if it doesn't work for you. You'll get more done at home in a week than most ps kindergarten classes do in a month (based on my older kids experiences and they had an excellent Dept of Defense school).
Welcome! Where in central TX are you? I'm in Austin, and my parents (and in-laws) are near Waco. My middle son will be 5 in two weeks. I also have a 9yo and a 3 1/2yo, all boys. We use an eclectic mix of curriculum, but have never used BJU. Sorry! I've heard good things about it. One thing about patience - that was one of my major hesitations (and one of my husband's), was that I wouldn't have enough patience. Well, there have been a few hard days, but (taking the advice I saw on the net) if I'd just STOP - and put school away for the day if I found myself getting too frustrated - I found that my patience has GROWN as a result of homeschooling. I am a much more patient woman, mother, wife, and TEACHER than I was two years ago when we were just starting this journey. I'm so glad I did it, because it has made ME a better person. The kids aren't the ONLY ones learning.
Welcome! I think you will do fine. I was not the most patient person in the world but homeschooling "has" taught me patience.
Welcome! Homeschooling will definately help you develop patience. BJU is a little to structured for us, but my neighbor uses BJU satellite for some of her kids classes and she loves it. She has triplets in kindergarten (plus 3 older kids!) and the triplets are doing well with it too.
Hi, I am from South Texas too more near San Antonio. My husband and daughter are heading up your way pretty soon to a rifleman shoot or something like that its near Temple it says. I havent been out that way in ages. Its good that you joined, its really nice here. Good luck on your decision to homeschool its a tough decision to make, but I believe its a wonderful choice to make for your family if you do decide. Do your research If you decide to join we encourage you to ask any questions here also joining a homeschool group near you will help too. Its not so bad the beginning years I wish I could go back! hahaha I have a teen now. Sam aka Frugalcountrymom
Welcome to the group. I am new too. I'm Sandra, age 43 and mom to two boys ages 8 and 2. Sorry, we have not used Bob Jones Press.
Hello and welcome! We're working on wrapping up K, and I must say, it's quite easy! Believe me, you WILL develop patience thorough your homeschool journey. And you and your daughter will both learn as you go. Remember, YOU are the most qualified person in the world to teach your child. Nobody knows your child better than you. Good luck in making your decision.
