My dh and I went to lunch at a local taco place yesterday. As we were finishing, a group of goth kids came in and sat down by the door. My dh noticed that they were doing homework, and I commented that maybe we were straight edge. So as we walked out the door, I glanced down at their homework, and it was Abeck and Paces! They were straight edge Christian homeschoolers! I guess you CAN"T judge a book by its cover.

It is also an interesting statement about just how mainstream homeschooling is becoming, at least out here in CA. Out here, we TRIP over all the homeschoolers!

I'm so hick I just had to read for context clues to figure out "straight edge". Nobody tripping over each other here, but hs is definitely gaining popularity.

In our area of CA we have a waiting list of 17 kids trying to get into our Charter school but it's booked up, they only allow each mentor teacher to have so many kids and that's it. And I was told by several PS parents not to be surprised to see more parents choosing to home school their kids because they are so disappointed with the our school district that they feel that hs is the better choice. And we have quite a few goth kids that go to our school. Just because they choose to dress the way they do, have shocking colors in their hair and pierce things that look painful, doesn't mean they all follow the same trends. Nor does it mean they don't want an education, so it's true we can't judge a book by it's cover because the inside is what really counts.

Your observation is proof that homeschoolers come from all walks of life, not a cookie cutter image that some people have about us.
