Getting Myself in Trouble Again ;-)

Now I'm sure that title made you look. . .


This has to do with the ruling in CA and the petition HSLDA is requesting people sign.


I"m thinking I'm not totally understanding legal stuff!


Can someone explain the following:


a) what the purpose of an online petition is--I have heard--and it makes sense--that they are a waste of time


b) what the purpose of a petition is in regards to this case. . .I understand HSLDA is seeking to have the ruling depublished. . .which means the ruling would only be applicable to that family. . .but a judge is not supposed to be swayed by petitions but rather functions to interpret and uphold the stated law.


I also have to say that in our church's court case against the NYCBOE, the BOE brought a cyber petition in front of the court and the judge called the BOE lawyers morons and suggested the boe find new ones! (OUCH!!!)


So not that I'm opposed to signing it or that I don't think the ruling has legal ramifications. . .but I have to wonder if this is really more for publicity rather than something that will actually be presented before a judge. (I don't necessarily mean that's negative--just trying to understand what an actual petition will do in front of a judge.)

 

Listern to Focus On The Family on the radio or online and they discuss the purpose behind the petition.

I think the petition isn't to "change the ruling" but to make it just apply to the family involved. Basically, don't punish the thousands for the one type thing. I listened to the Dobson broadcast and signed the petition (after listening).

But the petition, legally, is worth squat. I get that HSLDA is appealing to have the ruling 'depublicized'. . .but an online petition is as someone put it. . .worth less than scrap paper, because at least the scrap paper can be used. . .


My personal feeling is that this is for publicity to draw attention to the case and underline the seriousness of it? I'm not necessarily saying that drawing attention to this ruling is a bad thing. . .but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what point an online petition serves.
