I already reserved Saxon Algebra 1 for my dd for school this year, but the math instructor for our workshops is using Glencoe. We haven't used it before, has anyone used it before and what's your feed back on it, good or bad?

Glencoe is what they use at the schools here in CA. I have looked at it and it looks good, not sure what its level is on it but the child I know who used it for thier school work said they did not do everything in the book so that may not be a good example.
The text itself looks good and Glencoe is a good solid company for public schools to use... they have a really good web site too!

It's what I guess we had the most of in the school library so she went with it so the school didn't have to order more. It looks good, our charter school provides a link for all kinds of printables and help. I was just already use to Saxon and my dd really doesn't want to give up her saxon book for that one. I guess we'll talk to her mentor teacher and see what she says too.

A friend loaned it to me last spring as her daughter used it for a distance learning class. It was AWFUL!!!! Topics were not well explained at all. Now, it may have been her version, maybe a different copywrite date would be better. But, the one she had that she loaned me was awful. It was used with the Texas Tech program.

Well I think the idea is for the Teacher to do the explaining when it comes to Public School text books, so that would be right,

LOL, that's what I'm afraid of. Although our workshop instructor is really good with Math so I hope that will help but just in case we're going to keep the Saxon book to help with things if the other book isn't going well.

I am sure if he is the workshop instructor that he will get the main idea down annd yu will just have to do the back up.. do you sit in on the workshop too? Cause that will help. That is why I like MUS is I can sit and listen and "get it" so if there is a problem I can refer to what he said, and then explain a bit in dds way of thinking if I need to beyound that?

Maybe even send a recorder with dd to tape what the instructor says?

I liked MUS at first and then the dvd's weren't enough, because neither of us were grasping the problems. So then we moved on to Saxon. I'm horrible with math, my dh actually does the math lessons in our house. And he does well with it. And the math class is a two day a week class and the teacher runs the math lab so we can go by at any time for help if none of us gets it. She's a great instructor, and is more than willing to spend anytime she needs to for a kid to get the concepts.

well what works with some doestn work with others, we liked the fact there is a teacher instructional plus dvd and then the student books and grade books it makes it easier for me and for dd to understand. But I know it doesnt work with everyyone that way, some like TT , my ds may like that one , but since we have access to MUS nwo that will be what we use if it clicks with him,

I agree with you TeacherMom, it's great that there is a lot out there to choose from for everyone so we don't feel stifled and in a box. I recently went through all our old materials and found our texts from MUS. Some of them not all the way used.
