This is my 15 year old son and his friend leading praise and worship this morning during FCA AT PUBLIC SCHOOL.. In a classroom WITH A TEACHER present.. I LOVE that our school does this.. Bible verses adorn the hallways and prayer is still done before games..

I'm totally surprised that this is going on! Of course, it IS the Republic of Texas! But I'm shocked that somebody hasn't had a cow in the middle of the hallway and taken it to the Supreme Court because Bible verses offend their sensibilities - or something!

Here, there's the Pledge of Allegiance said over the intercom system and a student-led prayer every morning, but my little SN 4th grader got suspended last year for saying his grace at lunch out loud like he does at home. I forgot to ask if the Catholic kids get to make the Sign of the Cross when they say their grace before lunch.

I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere or not, but anything "religious" HAS to be student led.. The students make the signs with bible verses on them and they hang them up.. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes meet before school and they are student led as well.. There is a teacher present that helps organize it, but they stay out of it for the most part.. Same thing for the prayer before games. I do know that the majority of the teachers in the schools here are practicing christians and I know that some have even prayed aloud in their class.. Living in "the bible belt" I think makes a BIG difference.. Schools are still out for Good Friday here. When we lived in Colorado, the kids weren't even allowed to celebrate Easter at all and they had school on Good Friday with no reguards to it being a religious holiday. I LOVE that the schools here even have a mini packing party for Operation Christmas Child..

I'm in GA and there are prayers said before each game, over the speaker. At least at football games, the last one I went to was 2-3 years ago, but it was said then. I remember prayer before games in high school too...though that was longer ago than I care to admit! :)

I LOVE that he's bold/brave enough to "go against the grain" to stand up and do this. Like Jackie, I want a like button :)

The high school "up the road" has or did have a FCA chapter too. I don't know about the local one. Ours has a See You At The Pole event each fall (although come to think of it I haven't heard about one yet this fall...), I think they still pray before football games, those kinds of things. But I'm still totally shocked about the Bible verses in the halls!

I was surprised when I saw the bible verses in the hallway too.. My kids had been out of the public school system for 5 years when I entered a public school again, and I had it in my mind that all schools were against this sort of thing.. It's not that the students aren't allowed to do it, it's that adults aren't allowed to push their beliefs on the students.. So peer to peer is fine.. Student led evangelism :) At least here in Texas it's that way.. Another reason to LOVE Texas..
