This may seem a strange question but am in need of some help We are going to PA, in 3 weeks to visit our cousins, and they have 2dc aged 6 and 4, we are only going for one week, as one of our relatives is sick. We are only taking the baby and our eldest dd whos 7. So I have a few questions??? We would like to take gifts for the children, any ideas on a item from the UK which is hard to get in USA, which the children would enjoy? Any particular sites which are a must, we are staying in Lebanon? And finally are there any got curriculum outlets as I love my resources thank you soooooo much x
Wow not sure what you would have in the UK that they don't in the US. However I do know having relatives in the UK I love when they send outfits for the kids from stores you have and we don't.
Thanks thats a great idea, have you got any particular stores in mind? was also thinking some choc or sweets?
Where in PA are you going? PA is a pretty big state. I would say any type of chocolate or sweet, especially something that is traditional. My dd used to love some of the British kids programs, maybe some books or toys based off of some of those.
Souvenior items are also popular ideas. Like mini Big Bens or some other landmark that they can use for a geography/cultural lesson
British Chocolate is the bomb! The stuff they call chocolate in the USA (sorry folks) is nasty. Even Cadburys in the USA and Canada is horrible as it is made under licence with Hershy base. Anything with England on - sports shirts are usually good and I know there that the home schoolers have a hard time getting things like Horrible Histories as cheap as we do. We usually send our cousin in Canada England soccer shirts as she is a mad keene soccer player. I always think too what would the kids like here as presents from the USA and then that way you could try to reverse it....eg. something like the London Red Bus or the USA Yellow School Bus, Catchers Mits etc. Hope that helps SS x
Here are some teacher stores that are less than an hour drive from Lebanon. I am not sure how good they are but you can check them out: http://www.edu-care.net/schoolsupply/ http://www.youreducationstationcatalog.com/ http://www.educationalandfun.com/ The last one is in Reading which is around 40min from Lebanon. Reading is great too because there are a ton of outlet shops there. You can find just about anything in Reading.
It would be a little bit of a drive - maybe 2 hours or so...but it would be worth it. Independence Hall Area of Philadelphia is FREE. You can see Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and a few other sites. There's a guided tour through the actual Independence Hall. For kids - the rangers give out PA Collection cards which help them figure out a mystery. I've lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia all but 4 years of my whole life and JUST TOOK MY KIDS there two weeks ago!!! LOL
Can you bring me some Andrews Liver salts?! I agree on the chocolate - I was in Germany for a few years and nothing beats the European chocolate.
JELLY BABIES!!! You don't get those in the United States!!! I would also suggest Independence Hall. You need tickets, but they are free. You can either just stop in and pick them up, or you can reserve them. I'm thinking there's a charge to reserve them. We went in the summer, and we would have missed out if I hadn't read (while traveling) to make a reservation. We stopped at a local library and did. And boy, did we need them!!! But, again, that was summer. You may not need them now. Also in Philly is the Franklin Institute. Not free, but nice.
thank you ladies sooooo much jelly babies and chocolates, but my BIG question how will i get them there on an 8hour flight with out eating them lol will try and get to see the liberty bell and franklin institute, cant wait just bought some mcvities biscuits in a real cute english tin, again they will have to go in the hold as they would be so tempting and probably would be gone as well!!
I live close to Lebanon! Bring me some chocolate too! Just kidding. They'll like anything you bring, because you thought enough to buy it there and tote it all the way across the Atlantic. My brother, who was in the navy, bought me a cloth doll while in Scotland 30 some years ago. We have cloth dolls here, of course, but the simply fact that he thought of me while on the shores of another country, coupled with the fact that the doll had been sent from there directly to me, made it the best. I still have her, though our dog (who was a puppy at the time) pulled her felt facial features off and ripped her arms. The dog is fortunate to have survived that incident as I had evil thoughts running through my head toward him for a few days. I hope the weather stays nice for your visit. The air has been crisp and cool but with the sun shining, I think it's perfect. There is a hike near Lebanon in Mount Gretna that takes you up to a fire tower. You can climb the tower and see three counties on a clear day --should be gorgeous with the changing leaves.
