Anybody have a favorite, or know of a good program? I may stick with Life of Fred, but just curious. I'm thinking we DON'T want to pay for TT, and we canNOT use Saxon. Any other good ones out there?

Jackie, did you get TT Geometry for Rachael? If so, how's it going?

I have two in mind. Rightstart Geometry for my daughter next year because it's a course that involves a lot of hands on work - drawing and the like. Also Geometry: a Guided Inquiry for grades 8 to 10.

We did TT Geometry for Rachael last year, and it went very well. right now, it's on loan to a friend. She was fussing about the co-op offering geometry and chemistry at the same time, and wasn't sure what to do, because there was NO WAY she could do either. So I gave her the TT site, and told her that she was welcome to borrow mine. It's working very well for her, too. Right now, Rachael is doing TT Algebra 2, and I'll soon have to start looking for the next one.

One of the moms at AWANAS with lots of older kids uses Jacobs Geometry. I had talked with her way back when, when I was beginning to look for Rachael. I remember that she really liked it.

Here is a great free download to supplement any geometry you choose! http://www.geogebra.org/cms/

Jacob's Geometry gets good reviews. I love the Intro to Geometry book from AOPS (www.artofproblemsolving.com) but it is best for strong math students.

We have used some of Right Start Geometry and really like it. It is for a wide range - basic elementary grade level concepts to some high school topics. The early lessons were a little repetitive for where my dd was in math, but we solved that by skipping chunks of it. It was great for learning to properly construct things by hand.

Ooops, I didn't make it clear, sorry. I need hughschool level, as I'm asking for my ds, who will be in 10th grade next year. He's done Algebra 1, is doing Algebra 2 right now, and will do Geometry next year---just the way it worked out for us.

I'll look at Jacobs. I've heard of it, but I need one that he can pretty much do on his own--not sure Jacobs has that kind of support. He's decent at math, but not great. We've done little bits of geometry before, and actually he did poorly in it, so maybe Jacobs wouldn't work???

I know he could do the TT on his own-- I just don't wanna fork over that much money for it! I still need to check out the "...Fred" Geometry too. If it looks good, then I may go with it, with some other text as back up if needed.

Thanks for the info. everyone! I'll look it up. Any other ideas?

I know there is a DVD series that you can buy that uses Jacobs Alg (not sure about Geometry)....of course, it would probably end up costing about the same as TT but thought I'd throw it out for you.

Always good to see all the options. I found it when researching Algebra programs.

No one mentioned it for some reason, but MUS geometry hit dds spot. You have probably already checked into that. She is almost finished with it, about 20 lesssons? If that?

question on used TT...I heard there was a limit on using it... that you had to register to get it to open and couldn't use it used. ???
anyone know if this is true.

Yes and no. The stuff before Algebra is done differently. You actually install it on the computer or something, so you are limited on how many times it can be installed. I think the limit is 2. They will make exceptions if you call them (for example, if you use it for more than two children, or something like that). This is to prevent people from passing one program around and installing it on all their friends' computers. So if someone has bought it and used it twice, then goes to sell it, the new buyer can't install it again. Again, this is for their middle school stuff, not the advanced math. Not sure where pre-algebra fall. If you have any questions, call them!

    Not true

You do have to call the TT company and let them know that you bought it used and they give you a code to unlock it.

They do this so that a bunch of people can't buy one and use it all at once. They don't mind at all if you buy it, use it, and then sale it to someone else to use. They just don't want a lot of people using the same one at once. (like a co-op group) - Also, if you have twins they will tell you how to use the lower levels for more than one student.
    hope that helps

I never heard of that the lady I bought my from used. Used it on all four of her children and I have used for my second child now. So, I don't know anything about that.
I have never had any trouble with it.

What level was it? I called TT and discussed it with them, so the info I got came straight from the company itself.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm checking things out to see what might work.

TMom, I heard it's hard to get into MUS at that level, since it's taught differently??? I don't KNOW that, but just wondering what you think. Do you the the Geom. was deep/thorough/understandable enough?

    Deena,
I have not used the higher levels of MUS yet, but my experience with the program is it is taught in a way that we all can understand it. Now with your kids being older they can watch his video along with you and will understand it.

Also you can get them to send you a demo dvd about his program. Once you watch that you basically get the drift of his teaching methods. He just "simplifies" it for lack of a better word. He puts what you are learning or teaching in terms you understand or anyone for that matter. JMO

Hope that helps. Also the resale/ turn over on the program is fast, so if you do buy it and don't like it sell it. It will sell!

Deena, just reviewing the cd I was so into it! I reviewed it before we started it because it was second hand and I wanted to be sure we got a good copy. Well I got so excited about it flipping through the lessons I was recalling things I had learned! I loved it!
DD has been doing it on her own being as her age and learning style works best that way. She has been getting no more than two wrong on any given page.
She does every page there is too!
She loves it so much she plans to complete this level then go back to ALgerbra one and redo it in MUS.
THen do MUS possibly for ALg2 while attending the Church School. I am going to encourage our teacher there to use it, I may hve to become the designated "Alg Teacher" to do the corrections but I think it will be worth it to get this good curriculum for dd.
She thinks Mr D looks like her grampa which is part of why she likes him. She also learns independantly which is why she is doign all the practice sheets, and lessons and tests with no problem... I think your kids could handle it actualy..from what you have said about them.

I personally enjoy the way he breaks things down, and I knwo the teacher book is there to go over the lessons in, but we have rarely used that portion because she "Gets it" from the dvd!
Personaly I tried to get her to let me do the lessons, but she wanted to advance on before I could get to it, so I ended up telling her to go over it on her own then.
Of course I don't recomend this for every child but dd is good at this type of learning.
