I live in a smallish town and we have a little thrift store here. Every once in a while I head there to pick up books, as the kids are forever reading whatever they can get their hands on. It was rainy and blah today so I figured why not go see if there was anything good. The first book--literally--that I laid eyes upon was Ed Hirsch Jr's "What Your First Grader Needs to Know". I look a little more and find a book about tons of field trip ideas for homeschoolers---complete with things to ask, things to study about them, etc. I was already happy with those finds, then I see Mary Pride's "Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling." I have had my nose in them all afternoon. And all that for less than a dollar. Being a first year HSer, I was thrilled to find them.
Awesome finds. I have the Mary Pride book...one of my first HS'er purchases. 15 months later, I'm a HS book junkie of sorts. I'm in the middle of reading 3-4 of them right now. Even though we lean very eclectically, I love reading everything from John Holt/unschooling to Charlotte Mason to School at home type models. Enjoy!
Yay! I was given 3 of the 4 Mary Pride homeschooler books at a used curriculum event. They are really great. I'm positive you will enjoy your new book. I am new to homeschooling too and I found them to be very helpful. Isn't it AWESOME when you find a great deal?!
I am a penny pincher, so I love a good deal. Now that the ladies there know I will be hs, they said they will hold any kind of hsing books aside for me to see if I want them.
I have found some of our best books at thrift stores. We go to Salvation Army every Saturday, almost, because it is 1/2 of day. There are some great deals.
I'm always going to one of our local thrift stores, I've found so many great books there from great reference books to text books. I've even found some reproducible books. Another great place to find some great "finds" is garage sales. Last summer I found a box of classics that the gentleman wanted a quarter a book for. when he found out what I was going to use them for he gave them to me for free and pitched in a political atlas book to go with it. I have because of him all the books my kids need for lit class come high school.
I absolutely love thrift stores, and my friends of the library store, we are always getting good deals on books from them. I also get a lot of art supplies and such from thrift stores!!
I love thrift stores too! While We were out of town last weekend I hit a couple of Goodwills and found some really great books. They were having a sale. Paperbacks 20/$1 and hardbacks 6/$1. I Ended up getting a bunch of bible study books still in plastic wrap and a few craft books for the girls for .60 Then we went to the other one and I found a great bible curriculum for the kids with reproducable pages and some other books. Their prices were higher but still VERY cheap. The weekend before we took my older son to his Grandmas and on the way back noticed that the library in one of the towns we were going through was having a used book sale. couldn't pass that up!! So we stopped in and I got a set of childrens literature books for $6. They have some GREAT classic literature in them and some awesome poems. My husband thinks I'm insane. I can't stop buying books. Not that I "need" anymore but when you find them for such a great deal it's hard to pass them up. I have textbooks that I won't use for several years but I don't want to get rid of them because as soon as I do I'll regret it. KWIM??
I LOOOOOVVVE thrift stores, especially our local Goodwill. Not only do I find books and art supplies but learning games, manipulatives, etc. And some great shelving, too! Bookshelves for a little as $3.75!!! And, of course, garage sales are great too!
Exactly!! I have picked up a couple upper elementary ones even though dd doesnt need them now. Because you never know when a deal like that will come along again.
That is awesome! AND you gave me the idea that any books I have left will go to our local thrift store if I they will take them! Thanks!
He he---I am going to be trying to visit family back home hopefully this year.....now I know who to look up if I go thrift shopping.
Went to thrift store, thier book section was over flowing no home schooly things but some really old kids encyclopedias so I didn't get anything AND didnt ask cause they were so busy , I do know from reading signs that I can bring the books there when I am through with them. I also rememberd why I don't go to thrift stores, I always get itchy swollen hands after being in them because of the dust.
I'm sorry you are allergic. We sneeze a lot when we are in the book section at one of the thrift stores here in town. But usually are fine at the other places. I do have to wash my hands as soon as I can because they feel dirty.
I have problems in most stores if they are not really super clean, it gets emberassing but allergies are allergies
My mom is the homeschool material for cheap queen. She got me almost a full year of Abeka workbooks for 3's for a buck (brand new never even opened ), she also got me grades 1-6 student math books from purposeful design (or something like that) for $2 (brand new as well never used), I can't tell you how many other homeschool things like other books, or posters she has gotten me for really really cheap. At different garage sales. She is a great asset.
I have had a lot of luck around my house. A local church with a large homeschooling population also runs their own thrift store. They have a shelf set aside for homeschooling materials and books. I LOVE THEM!!!!
We have a used bookstore here like that, It's a sure bet that I'm coming out of their store with several books every time. They also put on a homeschool book fair twice a year, which I love!
