I have been looking for a good grammar program to start in the fall. I am interested in Winston Grammar and Easy Grammar. Both of my children have a little grammar knowledge and do not seem to struggle with grammar too much. Has anyone used either and what were your opinions of them?
I really like Easy Grammar. It's easy to use, and you really don't need too much background. I had been poor in teaching grammar, then put Rachael in a grammar/essay class taught by a retired English teacher when she was 12. She did very well, and the next year I put her in Easy Grammar because I found the book at a used sale, and thought it looked good. She says she wished she would have had the EG before taking the class. that it would have been easier if she had the understanding she received from EG.
We just started Easy Grammar late in this school year with my dd10 and ds13. I am using the same book for both at the recommendation of a friend. I love how it starts with prepositions so you can "cross them off" and focus on the rest of the sentence. I have little experience with it yet. The manual contains all of the student's pages and tests. Making copies of the student pages is encouraged. This will make it resellable for you when you are finished.
Illuminations (the lit program to go along with Mystery of History) uses these - both of them. They do Grammar Punk for the elem/middle schoolers and Winston for high school. Personally we love Rod & Staff.
I just received EG from the publisher to review on our curriculum store. I like it a lot and I am actually considering using it next school year. My homeschooling friend who used to be a teacher in public school, said she uses it for all her children (3 from 1-5th grade). She had them do tests to see their grade level and for grammar it was 3 grades above for each child! Next week I should receive the Winston in the mail from the publisher for review as well. I too am considering this and it will prob be between EG and Winston. I have never previewed Winston and am looking forward to it.
We love Easy Grammar. It's worked very easily into our schedule. It's helping my 5th Grader right now, more than my 3rd Grader. BUT, they're both learning A LOT about grammar. It is, truly, easy (to teach, to do, to explain).
My son used Winston Grammar. He liked it as much as I think he can like any grammar book. He did well with it. He went through it twice with a year break in between. He did not like Winston Grammar advanced level. Never used Easy Grammar but have heard a lot of great things.
We LOVE Easy Grammer!! I've never looked at Winston Grammer so I'm interested in your review on it. Angela
I just ordered Winston. I am hoping Ems likes it. I didn't want to get a complete program that combined grammar and writing. We did this for many years and I really want something that focuses on each individually. There were a few other programs that looked great but I couldn't get away from Winston.
I finally received Winston Grammar for review. It is different from Easy Grammar...but good all the same. It comes with clue cards and thorough instructions on using them and identifying the different parts of the sentence. It can be taught in about 10 - 20 minutes each day. They only instruct you to do 3 sentences per day. If you have an advanced student or a quick learner, I would recommend getting the additional practice sheets. We are opting to use Easy Grammar next year for a 7th grader and 5th grader. I like the way you learn about prepositional phrases first. I have gone back and forth weighing my options with both and feel that will be a better fit for us. Winston Grammar does look good too though! I may use the clue cards anyway!
Thanks for all the responses. I am going to try Easy Grammar. I bought Writing Strands to go along with this so hopefully this will be a good fit for us.
