We're very, very unschooly. My son, who is 10, is now interested in learning grammar and punctuation rules. Are there any good books out there that would be aimed at his age group? Nothing too workbook like...he has a strong dislike of workbooks. Even a good website would do. He knows more than he thinks he does because he reads a LOT, but something that would pull it all together for him would be great. Any ideas?

I read the sample, which is most of the introduction, and noticed a couple of things. It's British, obviously, and slightly off-color in the intro (which might be a redundant statement). I didn't think the book was aimed at 10 year olds. There are tons of grammar sites online. Or you might look at Daily Grams. It is a workbook, but you only have to do 5 or 6 items per page, one page a day for a school year. http://www.easygrammar.com/index.html There's also a webpage called Daily Grammar, which is not related to Daily Grams, which also covers stuff at about 5 items per day. http://www.dailygrammar.com/
http://www.grammarbook.com/english_rules.asp and http://home.pct.edu/~evavra/kiss/wb/PBooks/index.htm are free. You might also find http://www.writingfoundations.com/downloads/ helpful.
For 10, I'm imagining in 4th or 5th grade? Full "Easy Grammar" would be very thorough in teaching the rules. I really like the way they teach because the student memorizes the prepositions, and they learn to break down a sentence by eliminating the prepositional phrases, thus being able to find the subject, verb, etc. faster/easier. They do a very thorough job! My kids do a full 3 years of EG (4th, 5th & 6th). My 7th grader this year did ONLY Daily Grams for 7th Grade. And then I'm going to let her do www.dailygrammar.com for this coming year. My middle has one more year of EG. It is black and white, and it's sorta dry BUT if you do both sides of a worksheet - you can basically do one full worksheet a day and you're done in a school year. (as the grades progress, there are some days you have to do more, so I try to break up the ones that have lots of reading on them of the rules, etc. and then they'll do one "writing" one that is practice of what they learned - so on those days it's more pages). Hope this helps!
