Okay...I've posted here before on my dd's struggles with grammer. She's 9 and about a level under where I would hope she would be. I'm using a McGraw/Hill language arts book, scheduled in grammer but it only goes up to 21 weeks. Reason? I'm skipping over the essays, writing assignments, proofreading they have. She isn't a strong speller either, so she sit's there more worried about how she's spelling things, then add the pressure of putting punctuations, verbs, nouns, and making sure it's not a compound sentence and you have a recipe for disaster. So I need to fill in the rest of the weeks...here's where I need suggestions. I have workbooks left over from last year and our christian light curriculum. There are somethings new i can cover like quotations...but basically it's all the same that we will cover in the language arts book. So, should i just plug along and just use those workbooks as more review, or should i go back to the beginning of the language arts book and actually try doing the writing assignments and proofreading stuff, (i seriously don't remember doing that THAT young..am i mistaken?)

oh i'll definatly check that out. Do kids really need to learn this proofreading stuff this early?? I seriously don't remember doing that until I was older...I'm afraid it would overwhelm her big time...but if she needs to know it...

I would say maybe some proof reading but not all. I would make my girls only proof read a sentence or two at the beginning then add more as they got older.
Do you have spelling words where she has a test on Friday? have her practice the words every day, one day write them, next write them in a sentence, next write them in a short story this like that. That might help her with spelling...

I don't do much grammar or punctuation in elementary school but I did want to start my son this year. I wanted to give him just some simple basic rules so he can continue to write until I do something more rigorous in late middle school or even high school depending on his age and ability. I really lucked out in finding this

    http://www.amazon.com/Punctuation-M...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281540611&sr=8-2

There is a grammar book to but I haven't seen it.

The punctuation book though has super simple explanations but everything I read so far was just detailed enough to make sense. It was perfect for an elementary overview to get them started so they can use it in their writing. I do wish it had a little extra practice but I will just write a couple quick sentences later in the week to make sure it stuck and then move onto the next thing. If you want something you have to do every single day though or has tons of review then when of the regular home school curriculum might be better for you.

Honestly at nine we did a lot of handwriting and copy work but there are so many philosophies on teaching writing that you will probably get as many different answers as people who reply to this thread.

My daughter loves using Growing with Grammar and they now have a Vocabulary and Spelling book too. I love it because of the reasonable prices under $30 each!

With the CLE I use, the very basics of sentence writing is introduced, so for proofreading I just have them check the things they've been taught, like first word in a sentence capitalized, proper names capitalized, either a period or a question mark at the end, just the most basic stuff. Toward the end of the course, last two or three units, they're introduced to writing a few sentences about a picture (let a picture suggest a story to them), or draw a picture of someplace they like to go and write a few sentences about it, or draw a picture of something they like to do and write a few sentences. Not real picky about spelling at this point, but any words they really should know (according to the phonics they've had), I'll help with and let the rest wait til second or third grade... Then in second grade they get a few more capitals rules, punctuation marks, so we add that to their "look to see" proofreading. Did you indent your paragraph? Did you put a title at the top? Easy-peasy. The more stuff they learn, the more there is to check for.
