I'm taking a firearms safety course on the weekend (to get my Firearms Acquisition Certificate so I can buy and use firearms - required in Canada) and I registered yesterday and got the textbook so I can study.

It's an excellent book! It helped me understand how guns work and has a lot of safety advice. There's a full review on my blog for those interested. It is Canadian so there will be info on legislation that's not applicable to US citizens but I'm actually enjoying this text and thought it might be good for anyone here who's will be teaching their children to shoot.

Anyhow, the text is available as a free pdf download here!

    Awesome Dawn! Thanks!!

We have recently opened up to the kids that there are guns other than BB guns in our house. Garrett has had his own BB gun for about a year and a half now.. and will soon be allowed to move up to shooting the 22 (with supervision of course).

here in ohio they are offering classes for adults but also summer children's courses in gun safety as well as helping them with the classes for deer hunting season. I think it is a great idea. Not only for us who have shotgun in the home but also so if my daughter goes somewhere else she knows how to safely handle the situation if there is a gun in the home. We always ask before letting her go somewhere where we are not. Two of the most important questions are there any weapons in the home including fire arms? what measures are taken to protect the children from these weapons

We have a gun safe. We also have a quick safe for the handgun which only hubby and I know the combo. And even then, it's not loaded.

I remember in Phoenix we stored the gun and clip in separate places, when were robbed the guy stole the gun, but had no clip! LOL :D

    Thanks for the link. :D

Where we live n franklin county ohio they give you free handgun locks the kind that thread through so you can't store the clip in it. My dad has several guns and much to my moms dismay a big giant gun safe in the front room (her dismay is that is in the front room not the safe itself).

We want to get our conseal carry permits.

There's definitely info in that text about how to handle and carry a gun safely that even a kid with a BB gun could use. :)

There is no mention of fully automatic guns as they're prohibited in Canada and little mention of handguns because they're restricted (further courses required to own those). But if you're interested in guns for hunting, target shooting or even historical re-enacting it's a great source. You even learn how to load a muzzleloader! :D

Awesome :) Jacob has I THINK 3-4 Airsoft rifles as well as Joe having a few other guns... all in gun safes - ammo stored seperately....

4-H has a great shooting program as well.... both kids are in it and love it.

It's a brand new safe very nice hunter green color. We use it to stash the crayons away from the little one....she is attracted to walls....lol.

It is really big and nice because we have made digital copies of our pictures and gave my parents a copy to put in there incase something happens. It's fire proof up to 1,000 degrees. I think it is awesome. My DD thinks it is a big penny bank she points to it and gives papaw the cutsie anime eyes and says "papaw money?"... Its adorable.

FYI, Stone, DW40 takes crayon off of walls! (And I found this out the HARD way, lol!!!

Also, it's easier to get your Concealed Carry OUTSIDE of Franklin County. Being Columbus proper, they're more touchy about such things. There's less red tape in the outlying counties!

When Rachael was 8, she did her oral report to our hs co-op (a very small co-op!) on gun safety. Carl had a Study Hall last period of the day, and he got someone to cover it so he could leave early to be there (and to bring the gun, 'cause this momma wasn't comfortable with it, lol!). Well, her report sure had the kids' attention, especially the boys, more than any other report given, lol!!! She has been deer and turkey hunting (though she says the only turkey she saw was the one that drove her down there, lol!) Phillip went deer hunting for the first time this fall.

Sounds like it was a good report.

We started our boys out at a young age learning about guns and gun safety. We too have numerous huge gun safes.

Learning about gun safety is good for kids because you never know what they will encounter at a neighbors' house. kwim?

Referring to fully automatice weapons: Here in the states if you want to pocess a fully automatic
(not semi-auto) weapon you have to get a Tax Stamp which you get from the feds and it will cost $20,000.00 for a M-16 and $3000.00 for a Mac-10, both of firearms have to be purchased from a Class 3 dealer. Those numbers above are JUST for the Tax Stamp, the price of the firearm is additional. Needless to say you would have to be wealthy to afford that.
