Well, Halloween is coming up fast. In September our 3 year old daughter Katerina was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. So far, I think the shock, the adjustments, and the learning everything is going smoothly, we are over the OMG  hump and going on with life. BUT.... halloween is coming up :? And then after that, Valentines and Easter. I have this wonderful carb book to follow, gives the carbs that are in everything you can think of including every menu of about 200 restaurants. To keep her blood sugar between 70-140 (which is what her pediatric endocrynologist wants hers to be since she is so young), we use the formula

"bloodsugar" -100 + carb units = insulin given (thats the short acting, Novolog)
    . . . . . . . .100

Ok, a carb unit for the record = 15 grams of carbs.

My question is this, do you know of any low carb swet treats, candy especially, things that can be put into a childs bag, that tastes like its supposed to. I have tried low card Peanut Butter cups (reese's has these and PWTHAAA :!: they taste like chalk). I will take recipes, weblinks to buy premade things, whatever you've got. Regular candy is listed in the carb book our dr gave us, but geeze....for example one small bag of M&M's, my daughter would have to be given a shot of 7 units of the short acting insulin. Is there any other moms of diabetics here?

Ignore the . . . . above, it was the only way I could get the formula to look right in this posting, hehe. Love and thanks for your help, Carolyn

    Not a diabetic now...

but had gestational diabetes. I wish I had some good ideas for you. Try looking for candy sweetened with Splenda or something. Also, now they have lo-carb Snackwell's cookies which we buy. My kids seem to like them....they looked like Keebler cookies to me. Try doing a search and see if you can find any stores or recipes with lo-carb candy. Oh, Susanne Somers has some lo-carb stuff on HSN.

Good luck! I know that will be so tough on your little one. I had some friends that both their boys were diabetic. She let them trick-or-treat and then had them trade in their candy to her for small toys (Dollar Tree stuff). Some things were worth ten pieces of candy and some were worth two, etc.

Yes, trading candy for toys. 8) Cool idea. I have visited a juvenile diabetes board at ivillage the last two days and have seen this done by some moms. I've also been googling for low carb candy  Susan Somers Ii will have to check her out thank you!

Cz4kids My mother in law has the same problem I know in our stores they have sugar free cookies, and candy we buy for her when she is staying with us. Might want to try that out. They do have Candy bars and they aren't to bad. Hope this helps.
