We just finished 2nd and K, and we did it all free; we are embarking on 3rd grade with our own curriculum. For K/1 I leaned heavily on child-led education and so would ask the kids what they wanted to learn more about this month and reserve library books on the subject; we visit the library almost every Monday and check 30+ books out each week. I did find several math texts from the 80s at a local library sale and scooped them up for .50 ea; we don't follow them strictly but my DD7 loves to read them and they give me a generalized idea on what is age appropriate. I also bought some science and social studies texts at the same sale with experiment ideas and for the kids to read for fun, which they do. We read "real" books for their reading, and since all three of my older kids are early readers, also for the rest of our subjects (as shown by our library assaults, LOL). This year, I'm structuring a little more, but only in terms of setting up content beforehand; we'll be leaning on the library heavily for the rest of the year. I don't do a lot of worksheet-type activities and I'm not quite ready to put the kids on the computer more than 15 mts/day, so I confess I've neglected exploring other online options.
These are good sites, also. Enchanted Learning http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html Science with Mr. Enns http://www.mrenns.com/ Free World U http://www.freeworldu.org/static/index.aspx
I've recently gotten some workbooks for free off of freecycle. Try there also get with some other homeschool families maybe they would be willing to share.
The books can be big - I mean they are real books. You can usually print 2 pages per side of paper and then double sided to get the paper load down. Look up the actual book - some of the books are actual scans of the real thing so it's as many pages as the real thing. Right click on the link and SAVE TARGET AS..... that will work
Her are some links to what we use for free http://www.bookadventure.com/ http://www.funbrain.com/kidscenter.html http://www.insectclopedia.com/ for lessons on Insects http://www.kidlitosphere.org/KidLitosphere_Central/Welcome.html Resources from a society of bloggers in children's and young adult literature http://www.learningpage.com/ http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/ http://www.learningisland.org/ In the beginning that is all we used (free online resources as curriculum). Now I am going back to that since we can't afford purchased curriculum at times and because my kisd are still young enough to do without it. I am doing only using a hand full of purchased curriculum that we got for free at Paperbackswap and through friends. The rest I am making myself and through free resources.
