I'd never heard of this as exercise! I checked it out online, but there are only two classes in MI and neither are close to where I live. Are you using a DVD workout or going to classes?
I did exercise yesterday, though, in response to this post (woot woot!) Thanks for the motivation!

may I join the group here? I am about 114lbs over my ideal weight, and I am tired of feeling tired and yucky all the time. I want to be around for my boys, and I want to be able to play with them. I just started with a program at church that's going to run for the next 6 weeks or so. I really need to find ways to change our eating :(

Don't let the class listing deceive you. The class I took isn't listed there because it's not officially sanctioned by Hoopnatica. The teacher uses a lot of the same techniques, but she also draws on her own experience. I'd check with belly dance studios, as that's where it's most popular here.

I do have the first video (well, ok, I lent it to a friend so I don't have it in my possession). I sort of enjoyed it as far as nailing down technique, but the class was way more fun. The great thing about hooping, is you can make contests with your kids. Like, who can keep it going the longest? Then it's not even like exercising. lol

Congrats on working out! Motivation is a fabulous thing.

Thanks ActressDancer, I'll check that out. Belly dancing sounds fun too...although I haven't seen that offered around here either. But I'll definitely keep looking! Thanks :)

And, welcome to the group, Birbitt!

Thanks blessed! So far I've been using the wii fit plus to meet my exercise goals (starting small, working up), and I've been focusing on making small changes to my diet. I know that I'll fail if I change it all at once. So I'm working on not eating sweets more than once a week, and making some better choices. Also if I must have that food that I know I shouldn't eat I'm only allowing myself that food in TINY amounts.

I cut soda out alltogether but replaced it with Green Tea (I need caffeine to curb my migraines), and I drink the tea either unsweetened or with a no calorie xylitol sweetner(it's nature's sweetner found in fruit so hopefully it's better than things like equal and such)

Any ideas for healthy meals would be appreciated because the idea of steamed veggies, boiled chicken breast, and brown rice for every meal doesn't seem apetizing.

Hi guys! Thanks for keeping things running smoothly while I was "gone". I ended up with too many things on my plate the last few days- and computer time bit the dust. I tried to get here to read, but missed ya!

Patty- Congrats on the 45 pounds loss! Enjoy your date night! DH and I just had one. We dropped the boys off with Grandma and Grandpa and went out for dinner. I had a yummy salmon dish- after the seafood talk it was delicious! MKR- how was the seafood place?

Welcome to Blessed Life and Birbitt!! Come on in!

Patty and Birbitt- I'm in agreement with you on portion sizes! It seems I do my best when I start controlling that first. Also, if I drink a little water before sitting down to eat it helps kick in that I am full before over-eating. But nothing really works other than elbow-grease- pushing myself away from the table!

Amie- congrats on the weigh/measuring success! 7.2 lbs of body fat is great! And good job on the push-ups- I'm working on my arm strength right now. It was alot better when I had 15 pound babies/toddlers to heft around- now my kids are all growing up, and I've not needed the arm muscles!

Blessed Life- I'm currently looking for an exercise plan that will keep me motivated. I like Leslie Sansone's walks, but don't stay committed. There is a new Zumba class in town, but you have to join the gym to attend. :( Amie- I'll have to check out the hoops dance.

Amie- I'm glad you are having success with a trainer. I would love an instructor in a Billy Blanks type workout- but haven't found one. That is wise that you have expert help, plus an accountability. I'd like at least a walking buddy so I HAVE to get out. But with me needing to be at the church office by 9:30 M-F, I'd need to find a VERY early walker.

Nice to see more people joining. I'll have to look and see what kind of recipes might help out. With three teen/pre-teen boys, we are a meat and potatoes family- that's where the serving size/amount comes in for me! For the new people, I will start an "August" thread on Saturday.

Drink your water (especially in the summer heat!) and kiss your kids (calorie free!)-

Xylitol is better than artificial sweeteners. You can also sub with Stevia. They have a half&half version available at major grocers (called TruVia), but the other half is sugar. It's still less calories than plain sugar, but not as good as plain Stevia.

FYI, if you need a nice alternative to water, the SoBe Lifewater 0 Calories are sweetened with Stevia (using the brand name PureVia) instead of artificial sweeteners.

Check out the Weight Watchers website for tons of meal ideas and recipes. Now, the sweet recipes tend towards Splenda or other nasty chemicals, but the regular food recipes should give you tons of great recipes.

Thanks Amie, I'll check out weight watchers. I also joined spark people so I'm hoping their recipes will be good too. I'll avoid the sweet recipes, I figure if I need something sweet I'll just have a small piece of whatever it is, or I'll have a piece of dark chocolate. I don't like splenda because of the way it's made, and other artificial sweetners never tasted right to me. The Ideal sweetner tastes good and since it's a naturally occurring sweetner I figure it's ok. I don't mind water and drink it most of the time, but I must have caffeine to keep away the migraines and green tea fits that bill.

I was good yesterday, no soda at all, and I ate pretty healthy (except I ran out of whole wheat spaghetti and had to use the regular kind for supper), I also did about 15 minutes of strength training and 15 minutes of fast walking (wearing out the dog).

    Hey All!

Is it ok if I join the Healthy Livin' Group? I am 110 pounds over my ideal weight, and I would love to exercise and change my diet and belong to a group (Especially if it's with my Spot friends!) Even though I've got a baby on the way, I still need to exercise and change my diet (gallbladder issues).

Birbitt- Agreed. I can drink lots of water, but I have to have tea to keep my migraines away. I get caffeine withdrawl easily, and I need a nice glass of tea eery once in awhile! I know how that is! :)

Come on in Meg! And congratulations on a new baby!

I have a little 4-cup coffee maker in my office, and I brew a pot every morning. I have caffeine withdrawals if I don't, and it does help with headaches (although I am not prone to migraines). I do have an electric kettle to brew hot water for tea, but tend to do that more in the winter. I know that it would probably be healthier for me to NOT drink the coffee, BUT I find that I don't want to snack my way through the morning either if I'm sipping on a cup. So I have to weigh that into the equation.

Amie- thanks for the sweetener info. We use fructose in our house anyway, but I've been curious about Stevia. There are plants on sale at the nursery here- any idea of how I would use that fresh?? (I'm assuming it is in "sugar" form regularly.) Does it sweeten/taste things like mint leaves would? I'll have to do some research...

Birbitt- good job on the exercise. Keep it up!

Drink your water and kiss your kids!

I am so excited I have to share! All I did this week was cut out soda, aim for 20 min a day of wii fit exercise, and track my food (which by concequence made me eat healthier) and I lost 6 pounds!!!! In a week! I am so happy. This program at church was just what I needed to get going and loose weight. I can't wait to weigh in next week and see if I kept it up!!!

Also Momandteacherx3...we just discussed tea and coffee today in our classes and he told us it's fine to drink coffee and tea as long as we are still getting our water requirement along with. Also he pointed out that it's not the coffee and tea that's bad, it's everything we add to it! So if you drink your coffee black or with a good sweetener then it's fine!
