It seems like EVERY February we go through the same thing in our homeschool ~ kids get bored of the routine, they lose their focus in school, they start fussing, bickering, aggrevating and pestering one another. The fun of Christmas is over, spring is teasing us, we need sunshine and we are tired of being stuck inside!

What are you all doing in your families to ward off bad days and to get through the winter blues and the February Slump?

I added a fun, hands on based science unit study. We are still doing the math we always do and the phonics workbook. But each day there are a couple of fun hands on activities. A little more than what I would normally do. DS loves science. So he picked the next science topic, and we have been hunting resources for that. So our next unit will be less exciting, but very interesting to him. After that we have spring break, and hopefully out of the winter blah's. :)

We went to a bouncy place yesterday for a few hours just to use up some energy, but as for school we try to do more hands-on stuff - bake things, all kinds of art, science experiments, that kind of stuff.

I find myself that it is the idea of spring that is getting me down. I feel like we aren't putting in enough school. I am struggling with DD her first year hsing being difficult and just generally feeling behind. Behind whom I have no idea. :/ Anyway I do understand the slump you are describing. I think I shall have to find an experiment to pull out just for fun. Maybe one a week. It would be nice if they tied into our lessons somehow. But that isn't always possible. I did start a Lego club though so I am hoping that will give the kids something to take their minds off of the impending winter doldrums for them.
