Ok. Here's the situation. While Indiana doesn't require paperwork of any kind, I do want to do a transcript for my kids in order to use it in college applications. This is my dilemna: my son will be in fifth grade next year, but will be working his way through Saxon Algebra. I'd like to include it on a transcript, but he's not anywhere near high school age. For now, this would be the only high school level class he'll be working on. Is it okay to have a transcript cover more than four years? Or should I just start the transcript on whatever math course he's working on at the time he "officially" starts freshman year? Thanks in advance for any opinions. Carol
Yes. I took Algebra in Jr. High. While it wasn't on my high school transcript officially. It was obvious from my hs transcript that I had taken it previously. As a homeschooler, its completely appropriate to document when it was completed.
I would include any upper-level classes on transcripts, regardless of what "grade" he is in. Later, if you see he has all kinds of even higher math classes, such as trig and calculus, you can chose to leave off some of the earlier ones if you wish.
I just atttended a seminar on this very question. The answer is yes. If they are doing high school work with the same expectations a high schooler would have doing it....count it. Make sure you keep some documentation (like tests.) She gave the example of a child she knew who is finishing his 2nd year of calculus. He can choose to put all 6 years of math he has completed starting with Algebra 1 (which having 6 math credits on an application for MIT engineering would probably be good.) OR since having 2 years of calculus with good grades obviously assumes mastery of maths below it, you can choose to leave it off. Like Jackie, I would keep the tests and decide later. That's awesome he's starting that high math so young!
My dd will also be starting High School courses before she technically starts High School. I plan to include all of her High School courses on her transcript, regardless of the grade she was in when she took them. I'm using homeschool Tracker to keep track of grades, assignments, etc. The paid version also does transcripts. The transcripts can go back up to 6 years. Since she'll be starting High School level Math & Science in 6th grade, that works out perfect for us.
