I am embarassed to admit, I bought something over the internet that somehow signed me up for further shipments of stuff that I don't want. I didn't realize that this was going to happen Here's the issue, I used my debit card, because I don't have any creadit cards. If I cancle my current debit card, should that block them from charging my account any further?
Call the bank you have the card with, and ask them what can be done. They may be able to block it without cancelling.
also call the company, you may have to buy one more set of what ever you got but you should be able to cancil.
That is a drag! We got a virus protection on our computer and it expires Dec. 26th, they charged my credit card Nov 9th. They kept saying to re-new the sub but I always ignore the reminders, they got greedy and charged my card without my permission more than a month early. I canceled it, got a refund and went with someone else. I dont like sneeky people!
I used to belong to a site that was fee-based. This was not a scam site, in fact, I bet most people on here would recognize it. When I cancelled my membership, they reflected the cancellation in my account, but continued to charge my debit card. For a **year** (the charges only happened every 2-3 months, they weren't consistent), I endeavored to contact the company. I would log on (to my cancelled account) and fill out the online form. I never got a response at all. I asked my bank to block any further charges, and the rep did something like blocking charges on a specific date of the month. I decided that wouldn't do for my satisfaction, so I called back and asked to have my debit card replaced with a new number. This did the trick. It still accesses my same account, but the site no longer has a functioning debit card number. This would work for you, as well, if you want the bother. I did have to say my card was "lost" or stolen - I forget which - and I figured for all intents and purposes, the number had been stolen since it was being used expressly against my wishes.
Well, I called the company and they said they would cancel it. However, they couldn't give me a comf# and said I should get an e-mail within 24 hrs. I may do just what storm said just so that I know that they can't charge me NO MATTER WHAT. Boy do I feel stupid
Dont' worry - it happens to everyone - even with supposedly "reputable" companies!!! I would recommend canceling your debit card. It makes life difficult but it can be done. My bank offered to block the charges, but they way the company logged them, it showed up like a credit card charge, not an auto-debit (which they could block) so I had to just cancel it.
This has been going on since before the early day sof th einternet when AOL would continue to charge people with automatic bank drafts for monthly bills, even though people had canceled... They refused to send people paper cancel confirmations.. There is now some law or something that changed all that.. but I remember that brew ha ha over AOL.
I would definitely get a new card. Thing is, they can come back on your later and charge again and you won't know until too late. I would highly recommend getting a credit card for these types of purchases. They are much easier to overturn.
yes, I agree that a credit card is easier than a debit for these sorts of things. It is one thing I disagree with Dave Ramesy about. I only have two cards, one for pers. and one for business. I am thinking of gettting a 3rd to use for ONLY online stuff, just to keep track. Don't feel stupid for giving other people (and somewhere out there you are dealing, ultimatly with people) the benifit of the doubt. Warning: this company got me twice. (I don't learn) it is called CrystalVision and they say they have cheap ink and kids ed. stuff...but I haven't found any deals. it is a monthly membership...but I have to admit they were good both times about giving me a refund. (about 6 yrs apart...I didn't recognize the name until the stuff came in the mail.) sigh. SO don't feel stupid....I feel ya.
That happened to me and I tried calling the company back, the line was busy. I then called my bank and they cancelled my account and opened a new one right away. They also put a note on my account to not accept anything from anybody on that account. I had a lot of calling to do and changing things, but it was worth it. They also suggested calling the police and making a report to them, which I did. Be careful, it's that time of year.
I can't cancle the account, because trying to convince the Army to change the dd will be impossible. So hopefully, if i just cancle the card it'll get resolved. I'll wait a few months before getting a new debit card anyway
When making online purchases, your best option is to use a credit card that allows you to create a one-time use number with a specific dollar limit. Not all companies offer this feature though, so be sure to ask about it before requesting a credit card.
