I am Lori, a mom to two boys (gr. 3 and 6) and a girl in kindergarten. They were all in public school until the boys were in grades 1 and 4, and I pulled them out in April of that year. Then we intended on homeschooling, chickened out, put them in a parochial school for last year and this year. My oldest is not happy at all there, and we just pulled him a couple weeks ago. I really think it was God's plan that it didn't work out for us to homeschool the first time we pulled them out. I've had some life events that would have made last year a tragedy doing it. And i'm in such a better place to start this adventure. Right now, though, we are taking it slow. My ds#1 was really needing out of school, although he was doing very well academically, he just didn't fit in and it was taking a toll on his spirit. And it's been wonderful having him home with me, allowing him to deschool, and we've been attending a coop once a week that does music, phy ed, and art. He loves the kids that go there, he really notices a difference between the personalities of the kids at school, and the hs kids. We are waiting to see if we will homeschool all three next year, really asking God for guidance on that one. Our ds#2 was not ready when we pulled him out of first grade away from his friends, and I don't want to pull the rug on him again. I hope to have them all home next year, but because of his personality, I need to make sure that he's on board with it. All of my kids are really motivated to learn, and bright. So I guess you could say that I'm just gradually working my way through this. I am very jazzed about the possibilities that homeschooling affords. But I would love to get some guidance on how to get started, which subjects to start with, etc. Which brings me here.
Welcome! We started out homeschooling, did a two-year stint in public school and are now homeschooling again. So glad we went through all the life experiences we did. I know my kids both appreciate homeschooling in ways they never did before.
Welcome! I'm not really much help on starter subjects for a 7th grader yet. My oldest is finishing up 5th grade and we may take all summer to do so. Reading, writing/grammar, and math are the basics of course. I'd just about always start there and add others as you feel he and you can handle them. Check to see if your state has requirements regarding that. And what a blessing in that co-op! I'd love to find one like that! Seems that the ones here want to do the academics, which I really feel like we can do at home. Anyway, welcome to the Spot and to the wonderful journey that is homeschooling!
Welcome. My advice for you is to read a lot about homeschooling, go to a hs convention, and request catalogs from all the hs companies. Remember--You can do this and it can be a great experience for you and your children. Have fun!
