im in search of an american history curriculum, and even world history curriculum for high school age, but IM the one who wants to use it. I just think it would help me in so many ways. i would love to reinvest myself in the knowledge of how our country was founded and about the great men and woman who helped create it. any ideas? i would like it to be written from a christian perspective, it doesnt have to have "God" in it necessarily, just be a solid Christian foundation.
Well, you know I'm really partial to Mystery of History! (Though it might not be as "advanced" as you want!)
I just released an American History for upper grades: http://www.the-simple-homeschool.com/history-curriculum.html It is a very in depth look at the events leading up to the Revolution as well as the Revolution itself and the Constitution. 60 units and biographies and about 600 pages long. You could even quiz yourself with all the worksheets!
I do not have an answer to your question. However, I wanted to say good for you! I love history. It is my favorite subject since I started homeschooling. I remember hating it in public school.
I checked out Colorado Moms american history and plan to get it for ds next year! It looks great and every interesting even the questions and such looked like something I would enjoy!
Have you ever considered teaching it from a more secular view while explaining religious reasoning yourself afterward?
Thank you, what a nice thing to say! Let me know when you are ready for it and I'll send it over as a gift.
no, amlebede, im not teaching, im learning, lol. i dont want to go the secular route, bc i feel like the ps texts have misrepresented some things from our history. like, did you know that about half of the signers of the declaration of independence had gone to, i believe it is called seminary?? where they learn to be ministers? i had no idea. i just find that in order for it to be secular, they leave out any trace of Christianity, and i dont want that. i want to know how Christianity shaped our country and its founders. i know not all the founders were divinely religious, but most must have believed in a "creator". wy mom, i will look at your curric!
No, I haven't. But there's actually a yahoo group for those using it with high school. I think MOH gives a really good foundation. How much you want to build on it is up to you. Last year we did All-American History, which I think would be good for high school, but it was too texty, kwim. This year, my younger two are doing MOH Renaisance, and Rachael will be doing Notgrass World History. It's suppose to be very good, but VERY time consuming, as it includes history, literature, and Bible. I've heard to expect up to three hours a day of reading. It should be a good challenge for her; TeacherMom has used it, and really liked it.
Jackie thats the red books right? the Moh Ren? lIke i am using for this year? To the thread starter mom-I have found that as I teach them I am learnning more than I did in school itself. I moved a lot as a kid too, but I look into what is next for the kids and learn more teaching them as we go. This may work for you. Also --Yes the Notgrass World History is awesome, it is a lot of reading and so much information! My dd loved it and is really a big history person.
Yes, it's the red one. I'm having fits, because I'm ready to start it and want to get going. So much of it we reviewed two summers ago when we read the Foster book The World of Columbus and Sons. We had finished MOH 2, which took us up to the printing press. Three wasn't out yet, so we took two years to do American. But there was a gap between Guttenburg and the explorers, so we spent that summer doing the Columbus book so they had an idea of what happened between. I wish there was a good curriculum based totally on those books! They are SO informative!!!
I am excited to get started on Moh 3 too! ds is excited because he picked it, and its a real text book, funny reason but he feels like he has grown up getting a hard back book! We have always had paperback or library books to this point. Did you get the activty book too Jackie? Mom--- if you get this one there is a wealth of geographical and other learning in the work book portion as well! I am also excited about knowing next years US history for ds! No stress now!
I can't wait till next yr, ya'll have gotten my so excited about moh that i can't wait to start it , but dd is in 3rd and 7th and want to do with both of them so will have to wait till next yr.
Why do you have to wait? I started the first year when my girls were grades 4 and 6, and Phillip was pre-K. (And yes, Phillip took part to a degree, too!) You should be fine to do it with both this year.
moh ?, i saw on some of the reviews that in one vol you study greek gods, and learn all the names, and even build an idol to worship or something. could, if i read through and wasnt comfortable with this, do it my own way? i do believe it is important to know about the people who believed in greek gods, bc it is history, but i dont really want my kids building an idol, even just for the experience.
mama I do everything my own way. SOTW has teaching on the origins of some of the -----, er or other religions out there and we used the study to discus how they could have thought what they thought that started said religions ( boy I had to censor my words a lot here Lol)
my hubby says that i can't buy anymore book, curr for this yr! lol and I tought i read that you needed to start for 4th so, might try to talk the $ out of him though, it looks really good. (i tend to get into a buying frenzy bf school)
